On Wednesday, December 14, Carew Castle was once again the venue for the annual Barnardos Carol Service by Candlelight. A well attended service was very capably led by the Rev. Patricia Campion. The lessons were read by Mr. John Brock MBE and county Barnardos fund-raiser Eileen Denakamp. Sageston Primary School Choir sang, directed by their music teacher Mrs. James. Tenby and District Band were in attendance, giving the evening a festive air accompanying the carols. This year, the organisers were also delighted to welcome the Knight Templars dressed in mediaeval costume, which blended with the atmosphere of the illuminated castle. This was arranged by the Knight Templar Mr. George Wright. A vote of thanks was given by Juliet Powell, of Barnardos. She thanked all who had taken part in the event and Mr. Phil Thompson, of Texaco, for their help financially and practical help supplying the lighting and staging. Mrs. Marjorie Piper, chair of Saundersfoot and Tenby Barnardos Group, concluded the evening by thanking Mrs. Mandy Scourfield, of the Carew Inn, for donating mulled wine and mince pies for people on arrival, with all monies being given to Barnardos. The chair thanked all who had attended this event, making it such a success, with grateful thanks given to Mr. and Mrs. Parker for a generous donation to Barnardos at the end of the evening. This event has grown in numbers over the past five years and is a fitting start to the meaning of Christmas. The next is on Wednesday, December 16, which it is hoped will be noted in diaries now, to increase the numbers once again. The chair and committee members would like to thank all supporters of Barnardos for their help in raising £14,000 for children in need. All monies raised in this area are spent on projects in West Wales and that is 80p in every pound raised.
