Local breast cancer survivor Patricia Field launched a major fund-raising campaign for Cancer Research UK by highlighting the scale of the disease in the region recently. The 51-year-old, from Saundersfoot, posed with six pink roses - symbolising the number of women diagnosed with breast cancer every day in Wales. Cancer Research UK's latest campaign, 'Making Strides Against Breast Cancer', is calling on people of all ages to have fun raising money to support vital scientific research. The goal is to ensure that fewer women are diagnosed in the future and deliver more effective treatments. Says Patricia: "As I stand here with six pink roses, it is incredible to think that each rose represents a woman from Wales who will today be given the news that she has breast cancer. "While I am living proof that treatments for the disease are often effective, sadly not everyone survives. "Much more needs to be done before breast cancer is conquered and that's why I'm urging everyone to support Cancer Research UK in Making Strides Against Breast Cancer." Patricia was diagnosed with breast cancer in March 2004 following a routine mammogram. She underwent a lumpectomy, and is still undergoing chemotherapy at Withybush Hospital in Haverfordwest Cancer Research UK's 'Breast Cancer' campaign hopes to engage women, men and children in pink-themed fund-raising activities between now and the end of October. Cancer Research UK community fund-raiser, Linda Strange, says: "There are so many ways people can support us. One idea is to organise a 'dress pink' day at work or hold a special pink party for friends and family. "Money raised will go straight towards vital research, giving hope to women - and their families - whose lives have been touched by breast cancer." To help support Breast Cancer Awareness Month and raise funds for Cancer Research UK Cymru, Patricia is arranging a sponsored walk from the White Horse, Kilgetty, to Saundersfoot - approximately three miles - on Sunday, October 10, commencing at 11 am.
