There was a flurry of activity inside the Carew Pavilion as stallholders made ready for the Martletwy Show held on Wednesday, August 21 (writes J.R.J).

Amongst the many stalls was the Cancer Research one, where willing hands, belonging to members of the Carew and Cresswell Quay local committee for Cancer Research, prepared to spend the day, taking it in turn to persuade the show-going public to make purchases for this really good cause.

It was a slow start, but gradually as the day wore on, trade picked up. The stall generated much enthusiasm for its colourful and varied content, and the raffle received a lot of attention as it was realised that money prizes were on offer. It was drawn at the end of the day and the winners were announced.

Forty pounds, the first prize was won by Bill Henwood, Hugh Griffiths became £25 better off with the second prize and Jean Llewellyn benefited from the third prize of £15. Brenda Lawrence had a spa set and Mrs. Palmer had a malt whisky set.

Having packed away the greatly reduced remains of the stall, everyone agreed it had been a good day and were satisfied that a good deal of money had exchanged hands. This proved to be the case as when it was counted, the total came to £917.84, for which we would like to thank everyone who supported us, for without your generosity our work would be so much harder and less rewarding, and Cancer Research's vital work would in time be comprised.
