As an experienced gardener, Mrs. Constance George, of Milton, must have thought that she had seen every kind of flower, plant, fruit and vegetable known to man, having grown so many unusual things in her own garden over the years. However, even with a wealth of gardening knowledge between her and husband David and the input of a couple of local green-fingered experts, there is still no explanation as to what the strange fruit is she has discovered sprouting on her land recently. "I've been left flummoxed as to what it is; I've grown everything you can imagine, but have never seen anything like it," explained 83-year-old Constance. The fruit/vegetable is yellow in colour and a similar size and shape to a melon, but when cut open it contains a large number of seeds that appear to be connected to a main stalk. "First of all we thought it was a melon, then we compared it to one and ruled that out. It's not a squash, pumpkin, marrow or gourd either. "I don't know how it got there. The only thing we can think is that some seeds have been dropped in the garden unknowing to us, but if anyone can explain what it is, we'd appreciate their ideas," added Constance, who has lived at 8 Milton Meadows for 20 years.
