Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority is calling on British Telecom to save the traditional red telephone boxes. The telephone boxes are a much-loved and familiar part of the local scenery, being first introduced in the 1930s and designed by the architect Sir Giles Gilbert Scott for the General Post Office. A small number within the National Park have become listed buildings, especially where they form part of a group of buildings of special architectural or historic interest, as at Porthgain, for example. The vast majority, however, are unprotected and many of these are subject to British Telecom's proposed programme of rationalisation to reduce the number of telephone boxes around the country. The authority's building conservation officer, Rob Scourfield, said: "We are extremely concerned about the proposed loss of our traditional telephone kiosks and have made representations to British Telecom. "While the official deadline for comment has now passed, I would urge those concerned to lodge their objections to Rick Thompson, BT Payphone, PP06A21, Delta Point, 35 Wellesley Road, Croydon, CR9 2YZ, giving the location of the box and its telephone number."
