A local county councillor has encouraged members of the public to report ‘inconsiderate individuals’ who let their dogs foul and fail to pick-up after their pooches.

Saundersfoot’s county councillor for the village’s south ward Cllr Chris Williams said this month that once again, the topic of dog fouling had been brought to his attention.

“There is a very small minority of people who unfortunately continue to fail to pick up after their own dog,” he remarked.

“The enforcement service at Pembrokeshire County Council is under severe pressure and we as a community need to work together to look after our lovely village of Saundersfoot.

“I would advise that the best action to take against these inconsiderate individuals is the targeted approach using evidence gained from local residents.

“I’m happy to chase this up so please pass on any information to myself and I will ensure it is passed on to the relevant enforcement team to deal with,” he added.

Recently, in the neighbouring village of Tenby, members of the Town Council were forced to introduce CCTV in a locality where an inordinate amount of dog fouling occurred persistently on a stretch of public grass and pavements.

Raising the matter with her colleagues, the Mayor, Cllr Sam Skyrme Blackhall said that local residents had approached her with regards to the grass area and footpaths around Augustus Place Community Centre, which had become ‘very unpleasant’ with ‘dog poo everywhere’ due to irresponsible owners not picking up after their pets.

“A number of residents that live in the vicinity have approached us to say how disgusting the patch has become with dog excrement,” the Mayor told her fellow members.

“Some dog walkers in particular may take that route as a short cut to get from A to B, but some are letting their dogs loose and clearly not keeping an eye on them.

“A lot of elderly people walk through there and wheelchair users. It’s become very unpleasant.

“CCTV may act as a deterrent and hopefully help eradicate this issue, as people will know that they are being picked up on camera and filmed.

“It would help monitor the matter and keep an eye on what’s happening,” added the Mayor, with the majority of councillors voting in favour of pursuing the proposal.

Following on it was agreed to install a camera as a deterrent, with Gareth Morgan from WoW CCTV systems offering his services for free as a thank you for the Town Council for providing financial support to the Greenhill Football team, after he had picked up on the story in the Observer.
