Tenby Museum and Art Gallery is looking to recruit volunteers for its forthcoming season.

Mark Lewis, collections manager, said that during the winter months it was possible to man the reception desk and carry out the other work with just a few, but as the season progresses and the numbers of visitors start to increase, more people will be needed in order for the museum to continue to provide a quality visitor experience

Tenby Museum is facing critical issues with its future funding and the need to increase visitor numbers is more pressing than ever. Every single visitor to the museum contributes to ensuring the museum’s sustainable future. It is as a result of the museum’s campaign to attract visitors that it needs to build its team of volunteers, especially those who meet and greet the visiting public.

Mark said: “The profile of the volunteer has changed over the years and now includes students and school leavers who are looking to broaden their skills, while others who volunteer just want to spend a few hours during the week or weekends in a sociable and stimulating atmosphere. People who are new to the area, possibly retiring to enjoy all that Pembrokeshire has to offer, can find joining in at the museum means they meet new people, but also they get an insight into the wonderful history and culture of the area.

“Our visitors, both local and tourist, are appreciative of the help given to them when visiting the museum, making sure they don’t miss any of our particular attractions and that the children are given all the trails and dressing up opportunities to make the visit as enjoyable as it can possibly be.”

Nettie Powell, who has volunteered at the museum for the past six years, said: “It’s a great place to learn all about the local history and I have learned so much since I have been here and been able to impart this knowledge onto our visitors. I have made lots of good friends since I started and it is a fun and friendly place to work. I believe that I am getting as much out of volunteering as I am putting in, as well as feeling that I am giving something back to the community.”

If you are interested in volunteering, please contact the museum on (01834) 842809 to speak to Mark or Neil Westerman or email via [email protected]

Mark added: “The only qualifications that a volunteer needs are enthusiasm, positivity and time. We are more than happy to provide the tea and biscuits!”
