Calls for crossing improvements to be made on a busy road into Tenby have been made by local councillors this week.
Speaking at Tuesday night's meeting of Tenby Town Council, Deputy Mayor, Clr. Paul Rapi, told his fellow members that the 'bottleneck' of traffic that built up on a section of the Narberth Road, where pedestrians attempted to cross opposite Glenview Crescent, had become a very dangerous matter.
"Many kids coming out of the schools cross the road in that area, and the crossing island that is in place isn't sufficient to hold three or four children or those parents with families," he remarked.
"I'm not asking for a roundabout to be put in place, as that would not be the solution, but perhaps a pelican crossing in operation during school hours, would be the best way. It would help the flow of traffic and make it a lot safer for people to cross," he added.
His colleague, Clr. Hayden Johns, agreed, and said that he had monitored the area and seen 16 children trying to cross at the island at one time.
"There were murmurs that we couldn't put a pelican crossing there, but there is one on The Green that works well," said Clr. Rapi, with Clr. Mike Evans also pointing out that the crossing by Kiln Park was also effective.
"If you took the island away and introduced a crossing there it would definitely improve the safety aspect for children and the elderly crossing on the Narberth Road," concurred Clr. Evans, who suggested that the town council write to Pembrokeshire County Council's head of highways and construction, Darren Thomas, on the matter.
