A call for fixed speed cameras to be installed on the A477 through Llanteg has been made following an incident where a lorry veered off the road causing damage.

A report by Llanteg Village Hall Committee to members of Amroth Community Council stated that on July 20 a large articulated lorry veered off the A477 adjacent to the hall, damaging the boundary wall, some post and rail fencing and one of the solar powered lights.

“It buried itself in our neighbour’s hedge causing further damage. Fortunately, there were no other vehicles involved and no injuries,” stated the report.

“We are dealing with our insurers and have submitted a claim to reinstate the damaged property.

“Whilst we cannot prove it, we consider that the lorry was probably doing more than 40mph, reinforcing our views that fixed speed cameras should be installed on the A477 through Llanteg.”

Commenting on Facebook, Barbara Sinclair went into more detail over the incident, sharing: “The lorry caused enormous damage to the boundary of our field after crashing into the village hall car park wall.

“Debris was spread all around, the lorry penetrated 10 metres into our field, destroying a sturdy cattle fence, metal gate and several trees. It will take approximately 5 years for replacement trees and hedge to reach the height needed to form an adequate barrier with the A477 and its noise pollution.

“Traffic through Llanteg on this trunk road consistently breaks the 40 mph speed limit. Cars, trucks, haulage lorries etc. often travel at very high speeds. Local residents have monitored this.

“We are sick of the danger to life and limb caused by aggressively speeding traffic through our village and so, yes, we really do feel a traffic speed camera is absolutely necessary.

“There are regular accidents on the A477 and it‘s a miracle that nobody was badly injured in this lorry incident.” she added.

With others commenting that speeding traffic isn’t a problem on the road, others waded in with their local knowledge of the busy route into Pembrokeshire.

Kevin John Caley remarked: “For those complaining this is a knee jerk reaction. No it isn't. The residents of Llanteg (which includes me) have been complaining about people breaking the speed laws for a number of years now.

“This year has been particularly bad. I myself have seen three other near crashes in this stretch over the past month, all due to at least one party going above the speed limit.

“The latest was on Thursday of last week near the garage, which, if the van driver hadn't stamped on his breaks hard, would have led to a three car pile-up. Danger to life is not worth speeding, nor is the £10,000 worth of insurance claims that the lorry company is going to have to pay back, in addition to the new lorry it needs to replace.”

Jill Roberts said: “There has been more than one accident over the summer on the A477 - the previous week near Kilgetty and also near Red Roses.”
