Tenby councillors have backed a proposal to consider the introduction of a 20 mph speed limit within the walled town.

At Tuesday night's meeting of the town council, Clr. Mike Evans said that he thought the move would be sensible and easily achievable.

"There's no reason for anyone to travel faster than 20 mph in our town, it would benefit Tenby and make it a safer place for children and the elderly population," he told his colleagues.

He also backed the call for speed control measures along Crackwell Street where there were no pavements and some cars tended to do excessive speeds.

Clr. Evans spoke of his concerns, too, that the speed of vehicles travelling down the busy Park Road had picked up again.

"There needs to be something done in that area, lots of elderly residents walk down Penally Hill and cross the road there to the supermarket, so maybe a crossing point could be introduced there as well which would slow everything down," he suggested.

His fellow members gave their thumbs up to the proposals and agreed that a letter should be sent to Pembrokeshire County Council's head of highways and construction, Darren Thomas, outlining the suggestions.
