Several hundred people enjoyed a day out in Tenby last Sunday, despite the mist and drizzle. There was still a full programme of workshops and street entertainment, including circus performer Jugglestruck, local guitar duo Bluestone, dancers from the Hynes School of Irish Dancing, and local bands Redwing and Brian Jobson.
There was also a caricaturist, a portrait painter, and a pavement artist. The latter endeared himself to football fans with a portrait of David Beckham.
Top Welsh chefs Sarah Duggan and Carl Hughes gave cookery demonstrations on the WDA's 'Taste of Wales' trailer, using local produce, and so did Tenby-based chefs Roger Bannister, of The Blue Dolphin, and Tom Hunt, of The Reef. Overseeing all the action, and dishing out the end results, was Kate Morgan, the county council's promoter of Pembrokeshire Produce.
The pubs and restaurants around Tudor Square also ran special menus, focussing even more than usual on local produce.
Chairman of Tenby 2020, Mike Thorne, said: "Obviously the weather was disappointing, but we must continue to attract and entertain our visitors, whatever the weather. Holidaymakers staying elsewhere in Pembrokeshire will often choose to come into Tenby when the weather is bad, rather than the beaches and clifftops, and ideally we want to be able to offer more than just shopping. Quality shops are important, but visitors nowadays also look for that little bit extra, a buzz of something special happening, and that's what we need to generate more and more."
"We did have some complaints from people who had come to the event last year, regarding the omission of the local produce stalls. Readers of this newspaper will know that that had been the result of an unfortunate sequence of events, culminating in the Tudor Square retailers demanding that the local produce stalls be cancelled. We also need to remember that we must support our neighbours in the agricultural industry, by buying local quality products."
"Whether the event continues next year, and if so what form it takes, will now be a matter for the Chamber of Trade and Tourism, who are taking over the organisation of the event. Anybody with a view on this is welcome to come to Tenby 2020's Open Meeting, to be held at 8 pm on Thursday, June 27, at the Drama Studio in the Greenhill School Sixth Form Block."
