IT has been announced that Lt. Col. Barrie Davies, Deputy Commandant of the Glamorgan Army Cadet Force, will take over as Commandant of Dyfed ACF, on September 1, following the retirement of Col. Charles Walker. Col. Barrie Davies joined the Glamorgan Army Cadet Force as a Cadet in 1962. He served until 1965, attaining the rank of Cadet Staff Sergeant. During his service, he obtained his Certificate 'A' Parts 1 and 2. He also qualified for his Silver Duke of Edinburgh's Award. In 1964, he attended the Senior Cadet NCO's Course at Frimley Park. In 1971, he joined the ACF as a Sergeant Instructor in the Rhoose Detachment of the Glamorgan ACF. Commissioned in 1973, he continued to serve in Rhoose as the Detachment Commander. On promotion to Captain in 1978, he was appointed 2ic Barry Company. In addition to his normal duties, he trained and led the first team from Glamorgan ACF to take part in the Nijmegan March. He also trained the Cadet Cambrian Patrol Competition teams 1980 to 1983. He was promoted to Major in 1988 and appointed Company Commander. Since 1989 he has attended Frimley Park Cadet Training Centre as a member of the Assistant Directing Staff on Adult Instructors and KGVI courses. From 1997 until 2001, when he was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel, he was the Training Major for the 3rd (Cadet) Battalion The Royal Regiment of Wales. Col. Walker, who had previously served as assistant secretary of the Army Cadet Force Association, was towed out of the county's annual camp on the back of a Land Rover, while the county's band played 'Auld Lang Syne'. To mark his time with Dyfed ACF, Col. Walker has donated a cup to be presented annually to the 'Best Improved Cadet'.
