Last week was certainly a busy one for Carew Wesley Methodist Youth Club.
Unusually for the club, they had a trip last Wednesday evening. By kind invitation of Clr. Mickey Folland (chairman of Pembrokeshire County Council), members visited County Hall in Haverfordwest. This was open to senior members only.
After being welcomed by Clrs. Folland, Rees and Stock, members enjoyed a superb buffet, provided by the authority's in-house catering staff, before being shown around the offices.
First they visited the committee rooms, the members' room and then on to the debating chamber. Here, they were told all about the council and the services that it provides. They were also given the opportunity to ask questions. And judging by some of those posed, the club may have some budding councillors in the making!
Clr. Folland kindly presented club leader John Brock with a Pembrokeshire County Council tie, which no doubt he will wear with great pride.
It was a very enjoyable evening and thanks are extended to the chairman for his kind invitation.
The club's usual Friday night meeting was a visit to Mr. Kerry Thomas's workshop in East Williamston where he makes lovespoons. As it was Valentine's Day on the Saturday, it seemed an ideal time to go.
The last time the club visited Mr. Thomas they helped him make a very special spoon; it was later presented to Mrs. Morris to commemorate Sageston CP School's 50th anniversary.
Mr. Thomas was again this year making a very special spoon.
Firstly, Mr. Thomas talked to the children about the history of lovespoons and then went on to show them just a few of the many spoons he has crafted over the years.
He explained how the spoons provide a diary, as many depict historical events, such as the Queen's Silver Jubilee, as well as Mr. and Mrs. Thomas' own personal life, such as the birth of their children.
Members were then all allowed to help Mr. Thomas finish a spoon he was crafting. This was followed by a question and answer session (yes they are a very inquisitive bunch!).
Afterwards, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas presented a spoon to John Brock, congratulating him on being awarded his MBE.
So, all in all, a very enjoyable week and once again it was a Youth Club to be proud of.
Afterwards, John Brock threatened to hold a quiz evening linked around all the facts they were told on these two trips. So it is hoped members were all listening hard. Here is a head start for you. When at County Hall, Clr. Folland said that there are 2,371kms of roads in Pembrokeshire. He could not recall what this was in miles. Answers to John Brock please!
