The continued good weather in September allowed the planned weekly competitions to proceed without any interruptions and generally produced some good scores.
In the Yorkshire Cup, Pam Cole scored an excellent 39 points which resulted in a handicap reduction, followed by Holly Watkins on 36 and Heather Morgan on 35.
The September LGU medal was combined with the Peggy Cobb Trophy which is a gross competition. This was won by Gillian Roberts on 85. In the Medal, Ros Williams won the Silver division and also the spoon for the overall best score with nett 70. Gillian Roberts was runner-up with 72. In the Bronze division, Ann Wilks also had a nett 70, with Ann Dassen on 75.
The LGU give a pendant for the best nett score in the September Medal and this too went to Ros. It is no longer a pendant, but a brooch and may probably be worn by the recipient which the recent miniscule pendants surely have not.
The final Hill-Lowe Bogey of the year was won by Gillian Roberts on +2, with Heather Morgan and Anne Thomas-Ferrand both all-square. The winner of the very beautiful Hill-Lowe Bogey Bowl will not be known until the handicap secretary reveals this nearer the presentation of trophies in November.
A small field entered the first competition of October and this was won by Rita Collins with 36 points and Ann Marsden was second with 30.
Last week's Thursday competition was a Greensome Foursome and was part of the Captain's Charity Day. This was won by Gillian Roberts and Jo Walsh Morgan with 34 points, just pipping the partnership of Linzi Hawkey and Toni Lucas and Anita Davies and Linda Thomas, who both had 33.
This year, the charity in question was the Air Ambulance and so far £130 had been raised for this essential part of our environment.
One of the most enjoyable days of the year is the outing and this year was no exception. Once again we visited one of our favourite clubs, Newport, Pembs. This course allows all members to participate in either a nine or 18-hole competition, the food is always excellent and most years there is a superb sunset to enjoy. This year was no exception and apart from the wind, which was slightly stronger than a gentle zephyr, even the sunset appeared on cue as we finished our meal.
Last year, the captain, Beryl Oliver, was rushed into hospital on the morning of the outing and Joyce Gouldsbrough as vice-captain completed the organisation of that day. This year, therefore, Joyce asked Beryl to present the prizes.
Pat Fox was delighted to be in the winning spot with 36 points, with Senga Waddilove second with 35.
As usual, the beautiful prizes were given by Charles Birt in memory of his wife Audrey who began the tradition of an autumn outing many years ago. He always gives one prize for the captain to award at her discretion and this year the recipient was Mary Cherrington who is regarded as a bench mark for what the more mature members can achieve and who continues to play with great enthusiasm and not a little skill.
The twos sweep was shared by Linda Thomas and Barbara Shaw who had two on the 6th and 18th, respectively.
A tired but replete group finally returned to Tenby having had a most enjoyable day, for which we all thank Joyce very much indeed.
