Local emergency rescue services have been busy over the past week with a number of call outs around the south Pembrokeshire coast. Action began on Friday when but for the sharp eyes of a walker, a 67-year-old local man could now be one of the tragic statistics of HM Coastguard. The drama unfolded at approximately 3.45 pm at Giltar Point, Tenby, when a walker, from Cardiff, began to approach an angler down the slope to the point. As he did so, he watched in amazement as the angler slipped and rolled some 25 yards down the rocks into the sea. The walker immediately went to his assistance and managed to haul him out of the water before calling the coastguards. The full Tenby cliff rescue team was alerted and attended the scene. They comforted and rendered first aid to the injured angler, who suffered cuts to the head, possible spinal injuries and hyperthermia. As a result of his injuries, the rescue helicopter from Chivenor was scrambled and winched the injured person aboard. He was then taken to Singleton Hospital, Swansea.
FALLING ROCKS
Tenby's inshore lifeboat and coastguard were tasked to Monkstone Point on Saturday, when a nine-year-old girl was hit by falling rocks. Fortunately, the Rescue Helicopter R169 was crossing over after being tasked to another incident nearby and airlifted the girl to Withybush Hospital.
Mother and baby freed
Following reports that a mother and baby porpoise were caught in fishing nets some 150 metres off Tenby Harbour on Sunday, the local seal rescue sanctuary officer, Terry Leadbetter, attended the scene and managed to free both of them from the nets, none the worse for their ordeal. However, had it not been for the actions of a person holidaying in Lydstep who spotted the porpoise, the rescue may not have been so successful, as a spokesperson for the Welsh Marine Life Rescue centre in Milford Haven explained: "Luckily, the actions and common sense of gentleman called Mr. Nutty, who was out in his sports boat, saved the day and probably the life of the two porpoises. "He made sure that the crowd that was gathering to see what was going on did not get too close and startle the porpoises who may have become stressed while they were tangled up. We're over the moon that the porpoises were cut free safely and commend Mr. Nutty for his life-saving actions," added the spokesperson. HOLIDAYMAKER EVACUATED
Meanwhile, on Tuesday, Tenby's all-weather lifeboat, the RFA Sir Galahad, was launched at approximately 8.10 am to evacuate a 63-year-old holidaymaker from Caldey Island after she had fallen and broken her leg. The lady from London was duly landed at Tenby Harbour and taken to Withybush Hospital, Haverfordwest, by land ambulance. Tenby Coastguard was in attendance.
