Do you recognise this building? It’s none other than ‘Tindle House’, the current office of the Tenby Observer and its sister papers, at the bottom of Warren Street. It was formerly a showroom for George Ace motors from 1960 to 1979. It was built in 1906 for W. H. Smith (the bookseller and stationer), who had spent a year at nos. 14 and 15 Warren Street and whose previous outlet in the town had been a newspaper/bookstore in the railway station. In 1927, Smith’s moved to their current High Street location, then in 1928 W. H. Phillips and Son set up shop there. They were builders, contractors, furnishers, house agents, and undertakers. Their premises included Bryn Glas next door, and if the photograph is anything to go by, the staff were myriad. The window displays of jugs, tankards and vases are intriguing, given the company’s types of trade. Many thanks to Rob Scourfield for the picture. (Thanks also to John Woodcock, author of ‘Tenby Shops 1870-1970’ for the background information.)
