Members of Cymdeithas Tafarn Sinc look on as their acting chairman, Hefin Wyn, acknowledges the firm handshake of Hafwen Davies, witnessed by her husband, Brian.

Within two months, Cymdeithas Tafarn Sinc, with dedicated commitment and no little enthusiasm, has managed to raise well over £200,000 to buy the iconic Preseli pub and restaurant.

It was only in late July that an unanimous decision was made by an audience of well over a 100 at a public meeting in Neuadd Maenclochog to go ahead and raise the money for a community buyout.

The efforts were given a boost by Hollywood actor, Rhys Ifans, who recorded an on-line monologue which went viral. Other celebrities who have visited Tafarn Sinc also gave their backing.

As a result, shares were bought by individuals from all over the globe as well as the local inhabitants who were keen to maintain the Welsh ethos of the legendary pub.

“The Preseli area has a tradition of coming together when given strong leadership to support worthwhile causes,” said Hefin Wyn, acting chairman of Cymdeithas Tafarn Sinc.“Our aim was to raise £200,000 by September 30 and we were delighted that this sum was in fact surpassed - £234,000 was raised,” he added.

Project co-ordinator, County Clr. Cris Tomos said this had enabled them to put in a bid for the property.

“We are glad to say that negotiations are ongoing and we expect the solicitors to complete the purchase in the name of Cymdeithas Tafarn Sinc before the end of the month for an undisclosed sum,” he added.

The asking price on the open market was £295,000 and the likely purchasers admitted their money raising efforts would continue to the tune of around another £100,000.

“We have campaigning costs to clear and we want to establish a sound financial platform in order to introduce exciting new plans that will complement the present atmosphere.

“Shares are still on offer for £200 each and we intend to sell a total of 1876 to coincide with the date when Tafarn Sinc was built. They can even be bought by paying £20 a month over a 10-month period,” added Cris.

The owners over the last 25 years, Brian and Hafwen Davies, said they were delighted with the community buyout.

“We wish them well and hope to visit on a frequent basis to sit down and enjoy tasty meals with old friends after a long stint at the bar and in the kitchen preparing the meals.”

Once the purchase is completed, Cymdeithas Tafarn Sinc will employ the necessary staff to ensure the transfer is as seamless as possible.
