A joint business advice surgery will be held again this month following strong demand from local businesses across Pembrokeshire and Carmarthenshire - after a highly successful online business rates forum organised by local Senedd Members.

The forum attracted more than 150 registrations from businesses across the area.

The next one will take place on Tuesday, February 17, hosted again by Carmarthen West and South Pembrokeshire MS Samuel Kurtz and Preseli Pembrokeshire MS Paul Davies.

The online event highlighted widespread concern about business rates, the Valuation Office Agency (VOA) revaluation process and mounting cost pressures facing local firms.

Participants raised detailed questions about how rateable values are calculated, what aspects can be challenged, and the impact of revaluations on individual premises. The high level of engagement demonstrated a clear appetite for more personalised and practical support.

In response, the advice surgery has been arranged to give business owners the opportunity to discuss their individual circumstances directly with their Senedd Members. The session will provide a confidential, one-to-one setting for businesses to raise specific issues, seek clarification and receive tailored guidance.

Mr Kurtz said: “The response to the business rates forum showed just how strong the demand is for clear advice and constructive engagement. With more than 150 registrations, it was evident that many businesses want the opportunity to explore their own situations in greater depth, and that is exactly what this advice surgery is designed to provide.

“Businesses in West Wales are at a cliff edge, that is the consistent message we are hearing. Employers tell us that the current business rates system is placing real strain on high streets at a time when they are already facing rising staffing, energy and supply costs. It is vital that the Welsh Government listens to those on the ground who take the risks, provide the jobs and drive the local economy. Policy should encourage investment and growth, not penalise it.”

Mr Davies added: “We want to do everything we can to support businesses in Pembrokeshire and this surgery is a valuable opportunity for Samuel and I to listen to their specific concerns and discuss how we can best make representations on their behalf.”
