Sir,
Thank you for publishing my letter last week about the threat to the bus service from Pembroke Dock to Carmarthen via Tenby and Saundersfoot. I am delighted that several people have responded directly to me, voicing their real concern.
This service is a 'life-line' to many people who do not drive and have no car, especially older, single women. To cancel such a popular bus service on the grounds of lack of profit alone, is a great pity. Indeed, several people who have spoken to me have indicated that they would be prepared to contribute money to the fare! This shows their desperation for the service to continue.
I believe that the answer must be a political one; either WAG or the county councils concerned (both Pembrokeshire and Carmarthenshire) must come up with the solution.
I would urge people to attend the meeting to discuss the issue at New Hedges Village Hall at 7 pm on Thursday next, October 16. I understand the local AM will be there, and the traffic manager of Silcox, together with a representative of Pembrokeshire County Council. I would also expect representatives of Tenby Town Council, our local Pembrokeshire County Council members and members of the various community councils to attend, if at all possible.
We hear much about the 'well-being' of elderly persons, we are constantly being exhorted to be 'greener' in our travel and use public transport, and at a time when economic matters are in the forefront of people's minds, the loss of this bus service (free to many users) is surely an issue that our elected representatives should care about and act upon.
Mollie Neate,
Tenby.
