THE Biz (Monday, January 13, BBC One Wales) follows five budding entrepreneurs as they go through their first exciting year of being their own boss.
Two special programmes, presented by Jane Harvey, who also co-presents BBC Wales' consumer programme X-Ray, sees 15 finalists, chosen from a field of more than 100 contestants, reduced to five, who will start their own businesses. They are then monitored for a year.
Contestants have already proved that they have the stamina to take on the challenge - they have been auditioned by a panel of regional business experts, including local entrepreneurs, business support representatives and the media. The next step is to spend a weekend at a country retreat refining their proposals, taking in everything from creativity to crisis management, and pitching their ideas.
Jane Harvey said: "This is a fantastic opportunity for the winners as we watch them go through their first year in business and tell the nation the true story of the challenges, successes and rewards of working for yourself."
As the first new businesses are set up in The Biz project, in conjunction with the Welsh Development Agency, BBC Wales will be with them every step of the way in the first 12 months as they plot their strategy, figure out finance, market their idea and see if their business ambitions can make them a millionaire.
Among the five is Stephanie Davies from Whitland, who is setting up a children's nursery.
The others are Marsha Davies, of Rhyl, who hopes her balloon company will be a big success; Elinor Franklin, of Loughor, Swansea, who fancies her fashion design outlet will be the next big thing; Dilwyn Williams, of Tregaron, and Non Jones, of Pontrhydfendigaid, who are setting up a car rallying and motor racing centre in Mid Wales; and Ivor Beynon, of Nant-y-Glo, who plans to be an entertainer.
Now the work starts in earnest to see how they enjoy and exploit being self-employed. BBC Wales will be filming their endeavours for a new series of The Biz to be seen later in the year.
