Narberth supporters will be making a bee-line for Fortress Gnoll at Neath tomorrow (Saturday) to watch current and former players in action in the first of the two Brian Williams tribute game to be played between Neath and Narberth. One of Pembrokeshire's favourite sons, Brian Williams, the former Neath and Wales prop, played for Narberth before joining Neath, so that the Otters were invited to participate in these special games. The Welsh All Blacks have not used the number one shirt since the death of Brian Williams and the famous shirt will not be used for the rest of the season. In a similar mark of respect, the Narberth Club will not use the number one shirt during either of the two tribute matches. So great is the interest amongst Narberth rugby followers that extra buses may be needed for supporters and many other rugby enthusiasts from Pembrokeshire will travel to Neath by car. Kick-off has been brought forward to the earlier time of 1 pm to avoid a clash with the Six Nations international in Rome between Italy and Wales. At Neath, players from across the decades have signed up to participate in the game in a fitting tribute to their former team mate. The current Neath side is set to play for the first 40 minutes of the match while former players will be geared up to play in the second half. Former internationals Kevin Phillips, Mark Jones, Chris Bridges and Martin Morris are keen to play for Neath, along with old team-mates such as Adrian Varney, Steve Powell, Huw Woodland, Matthew McCarthy, Carl Bridgewater, Carl Gnojek, Barry Clegg, Steve Dando, Mike Richards, Geraint Evans and Dai Joseph. Centre Peter Nicholas, outside-half Clive James, wing Jon Dodd, prop Sean Gale and prop Rhys Davies will be amongst former players who will turn out for the Otters at sometime in the second half. Future rugby stars from Crymych, Narberth, Skewen and Neath Athletic under 8s will be taking the field at half-time to entertain the bumper crowd with their rugby skills. Seven-year-old Llewellyn Bevan from Maenchlochog will be special match day mascot and will run out with his favourite Neath player. He will also join in the action at half-time with his team Crymych under 8s. A guess the score competition and raffle, which includes some fantastic rugby related prizes, will be held prior to the match to help the Neath club raise as much money as possible for Brian's young family. A Brian Williams Programme will be on sale and will be filled with tributes from Brian's friends, Neath supporters and former Narberth players. Former Neath and Welsh international players Brian Thomas, who was Brian's hero, and Ron Waldron have both also contributed to the publication, making it a perfect Brian Williams keepsake. The limited edition programme has been sponsored by Cash Generator, of Swansea. Rob Purchase, director of the Oxford Street branch, said: "We didn't hesitate when given the opportunity to sponsor this programme. It was a pleasure to watch Brian play for Neath and an honour to have known him. We hope that the occasion is a fitting tribute, and helps to bring some comfort to his family." Wales take on Italy in their Six Nations clash after the tribute game and the club is extending an open invitation to supporters old and new to stay and watch the national team in action at the John Smiths Gnoll clubhouse. A complimentary meal will be served at half-time for all guests and a fantastic atmosphere is expected. Brian Williams had a phenomenal impact on Neath rugby when he joined the club from Narberth in 1983. The popular Pembrokeshire farmer epitomised the club's approach in the 1980s, absolutely fearless and never, ever beaten. Deenna Barton, business development manager at Neath Rugby, said:"We urge supporters to fill our ground and help us raise as much money as possible for Brian's young family." The admission price is just £5 for adults, with children under 16 getting free entry to the match.
