Breast Test Wales has returned to the St Clears area, offering free NHS breast screening to women aged 50 and above.

The award winning service is currently based at the Coach and Horses car park, where women are being offered free mammograms (breast x-rays) at it's mobile unit, in a bid to detect early breast cancers.

More than 1,400 women will automatically receive a postal invitation over the next few weeks if they are aged between 50 and 64 and are registered with the Coach and Horses Surgery in St Clears and Meddygfa Taf at Whitland.

Screening Promotion Officer for Breast Test Wales, Alison Clement, urged women to attend for their potentially life-saving appointments.

"One in 11 women have a lifetime risk of developing breast cancer and it's the most common cancer in women in Wales," she said. "However, breast screening is able to detect tiny changes in the breast before any symptoms become apparent."

Mrs. Clement added that around 5,000 breast cancers have been detected by the screening programme in the 12 years it has been running in Wales.

The unit will remain in St Clears until late February, before moving to Fishguard. Women aged 65 and above can request an appointment by telephoning Swansea (01792) 459988.
