A holidaymaker who helped rescue two men who got into difficulties whilst swimming in the sea off a south Pembrokeshire beach has been honoured for his bravery. Dave Kidner received a Royal Humane Society Testimonial of Vellum, presented by the Chief Constable of Dyfed-Powys Police, Terence Grange, on Monday, for his actions during an incident at Manorbier Beach, in July 2003. Mr. Kidner, of Bournville, Birmingham, saw two male persons entering the sea off Manorbier Beach. The sea was slight with a moderate surf, but was on the ebb which was causing a strong undercurrent. After about 20 minutes, both persons were being swept away by the undercurrent. They were being submerged under the water and they tried to shout for assistance. Mr. Kidner, together with a fellow holidaymaker on the beach at the time, Kate Johnson, entered the water and swam out approximately 60 to 80 yards to save both persons who were suffering from hypothermia and flown by helicopter to Withybush Hospital, Haverfordwest, for treatment. Mr. Kidner and Ms Johnson undoubtedly risked their own lives in this rescue. Unfortunately, Ms Johnson was unable to attend the presentation at police headquarters in Carmarthen.
