Whitland travelled to play Tonmawr last Saturday and, although they lost, all the squad can hold their heads up high for giving 100 per cent effort in this SWALEC Division One West clash.

The defence in the second half, when they did not concede a single point, was simply awesome; the tackling was hard and no one gave an inch.

Tonmawr raced into a 12-point lead in as many minutes, with tries by hooker R. Lawrence and flanker A. Gwynne, one of which was converted by outside-half Steve Lewis.

The Whitland faithful must have thought, oh no, here we go, but the Borderers stuck at it and came back strongly and after 18 minutes fly-half Emyr Williams kicked a penalty.

Just as Whitland were starting to gain some momentum, however, Tonmawr hit them again with their third try, although it was somewhat against the run of play and rather fortunate.

When winger Aled Jones went down to cover a kick through, the ball came off his knee and winger R. Bayliss got the touchdown. Outside-half Lewis added the conversion to leave the half-time score 19-3 to the home side.

In the second half, Tonmawr went looking for the bonus point try to cut the gap on Carmarthen Quins, but they came up against a brick wall and whatever they threw at it they couldn't break it down.

Everyone wearing the green and white shirt can take huge credit for a great display. It's very hard to single anyone out, but it would be fair to say that captain Randall Williams led from the front superbly well.
