Tenby's brave Boxing Day bathers are hoping to repeat the success of last year's event which broke all its fund-raising records.

Thanks to the efforts of the largest-ever crowd of 373 swimmers and its enthusiastic spectators, the event splashed out to raise more than £8,000 for charity.

This takes the total raised by the swim in its 30-year history to more than £74,000.

The swim of 2001 has secured generous sponsorship from Activity Wales, one of the companies belonging to Wales Tourist Board chairman Philip Evans, who lives in Tenby.

The event is organised by the Tenby Sea Swimming Association, whose chairman, Chris Osborne, said this week: "It's been proved that, whatever the weather, the Boxing Day Swim is a great community event. We are very proud of the fund-raising efforts of our swimmers, and hope that these will be enhanced even further when our 31st swim takes place."

Sponsor forms for the swim will soon be available, and bathers can collect for either their own good causes or the TSSA-nominated charities.

Any charity who would like to be considered for a donation from this year's swim should write to TSSA secretary, Maggie Thorne, at Yorke House, Lower Frog Street, Tenby, SA70 7HX, by November 16.
