Trading Standards officers in Pembrokeshire are warning people in the county to be on their guard about travelling gangs of workmen offering to resurface driveways at apparently cheap prices. "They often tell customers that the tarmac is surplus from another job," said Nigel Watts, principal officer with Pembrokeshire County Council's public protection department. He warned: "These people can be extremely persuasive. However, the work is often poor quality and bullying tactics may be adopted to press for excessive payment. "We are warning people to think very carefully before agreeing to have their driveways resurfaced, especially by someone who cold-calls at your home and who you may not be able to trace if things go wrong." Mr .Watts offered the following tips to those who require work on their home: • don't be forced in to making a quick decision on the doorstep • get at least three quotes from reputable companies • only deal with firms with genuine telephone numbers and addresses • beware of companies with mobile phone numbers • fix a price beforehand • ensure you have everything written down.
