RNLI lifeguards, Sophie Stanford and Cian Johnson, assisted an 11-year old boy after he was hit in the neck by a kayak on Monday afternoon at Saundersfoot beach.

At the time of the incident, the boy was swimming in the watercraft zone between the black and white flags, when the nose of a kayak his cousin was using hit him in the neck behind the ear.

RNLI senior lifeguard, Sophie Stanford, said: "As it was a neck injury, we treated the wound and moved the boy onto a spinal board, while the coastguard contacted the ambulance."

Tenby and Manorbier coast rescue teams and the South Pembs. sector manager were also in attendance.

The RNLI advises all beach users to swim between the red and yellow flags and use watercrafts between the black and white flags. The RNLI always advises kayakers not to venture into the swim zone and swimmers to stay out of the watercraft area."

The boy, who was on a family holiday from Hartburn, Stockton, was taken to Withybush Hospital by ambulance with his mum.

The charity's lifeguards currently patrol 12 beaches in Pembrokeshire.
