Pembroke Dock Pater 66

Five Arches 93

Another away trip for the Five Arches, this time a visit to Pembroke Dock.

Earlier in the season, we had beaten the Pater team in a friendly so hopes were high that we could continue our winning run. The rain had passed over in the morning so we had a pleasant afternoon in which to bowl.

Ashley and his rink of Dai, Tony and Alex had a classic game of two halves.

Completely out played in the first 10 ends, they went into tea 16 shots to five down. The tea, biscuits and a pint for Alex did their job and the rink fought back well in the remaining ends to only lose by two shots.

On the next rink, Ray, Peter, Clive and John also suffered at the beginning of the match, taking their time to get to grips with the Pembroke Dock green they were 13-3 down at the break. A much better second half, including a count of seven on the 19th end, gave them hope, but the Pater quartet won the remaining two ends to prevail by 25 to 16.

Happily, the other two rinks had a much better time. Lee, ably supported by Stuart, John and Ken, continued their good form. Always in control of the match, they were eight shots up at tea and extended their lead in the second half to run out winners by a comprehensive 25 shots to 13.

On the outside rink, Tony with the returning Ben, Steve and Gwyn also had a very comfortable victory. Thirteen shots ahead at the break, they forged even further in front as the game progressed and finished clear winners by 33 shots to 12.

Another 10 points puts us at the top of the very competitive Second Division table. With only four points separating the top five teams there is everything to play for. The next league game is away to St. Thomas tomorrow (Saturday). After the comprehensive defeat by St. Thomas in our first game of the season, we now have a chance for revenge and perhaps to extend our lead at the top of the table.

Rink scores (Five Arches first, Pater skips only):

Dai Rees, Tony Powling, Alex Watt, Ashley Hooper 19 B. Duncombe 21.
