St. Katherines 46 Five Arches 105

On Saturday, the Five Arches team journeyed over the bridge to Milford, attempting to continue their winning run. After successive victories against St. Issell's and Borderers, it was essential to keep momentum.

Rain and grey skies promised an uncomfortable afternoon standing on the green, but after a welcoming speech from opposing captain Mark, the match began.

On rink two, captain Ashley ably supported by Tony and two returnees to the team in Dai and Alex were involved in a tight tussle. At the welcoming tea break, when everyone had a chance to warm up, the score was 7-6 to the 'Kats' quartet, but suitably refreshed, the Five Arches scored a couple of threes to ease to a victory of 18 shots to 11.

Tony and his rink of Mike, Steve and Gwyn had a much more comfortable time on rink three. Never behind in the match, they held an 11-7 lead at tea and extended this by winning nine of the 11 ends after, to win by 21 shots to 12.

On rink four, Ray and his rink of John, Peter and Clive had a storming win. They were completely in control of the match from the off, 13-0 up after four ends and 23-3 ahead at tea. Continuing in a similar vein after the break, they romped away to an imposing 41-7 victory.

Lee and his rink of Stuart, John and Ken had their usual reserved start, finding themselves 9-4 down after 11 ends, but they replied with their usual determined finish, by scoring 21 shots in the remaining 10 ends to run out winners by 25 shots to 16.

Another good victory which moves the Five Arches up to third in the Division Two table. The next two weeks will be important with a league match tomorrow (Saturday) against Pater, the first Brains Cup game against the Mariners on Wednesday and a chance for revenge against St. Thomas on the following Saturday. Still all to play for.

Rink scores (Five Arches first, St Katherine's skips only) were as follows:

Dai Rees, Tony Powling, Alex Watt, Ashley Hooper 18; D. Hastings 11.

Mike Gouldingay, Steve Davies, Gwyn Beynon, Tony Brown 21; P. Simpson 12.

John Rees, Peter Hooper, Clive Webb, Ray Taylor 41; M. Power 7.

Stuart Askew, John Hubbard, Ken Lloyd, Lee Richards 25; S Slade 16.
