Quiz success

Thursday, June 25, saw the Tenby bowlers running a  fund-raising quiz in aid of the  the Tenby Greenhill School orchestra charity. Haley and Lee Richards, quiz masters, were particularly gentle this time.

Winners were the Evergreen, closely followed by the Bowlers and the Bridgers. A very pleasant evening with a very classy difference.

Prior to the questions and purely as a public relations exercise, two members of the Tenby Greenhill Orchestra, Sam Turton on clarinet and Lily Whitehurst on violin entertained the crowd musically with extracts from current musical hits from the shows.

Newman Vincent, who is still deeply interested in the orchestra's progress, gave a brief, but very impressive insight into the success of the talented players who are  playing at the highest level in the UK. We feel that such excellence must be nourished, as the generous applause underlined.

Our club is grateful for the very generous donation of raffle prizes. Even the winners donated their cash prizes to the fund. A great night.

SA BRAIN CUP

ST. KATHERINE'S 60 (0)

FIVE ARCHES 93 (2 pts.)

The Five Arches side travelled to Milford last Wednesday to play their final group game in the SA Brain Cup, needing only a draw to secure a place in the final.

Earlier in the season the two teams had met in a league fixture in Tenby, with the Five Arches winning comfortably by 65 shots, but this cup game was always going to be a tougher challenge.

The St. Katherine's team that took to the green was a strengthened side to the one that visited Tenby with the inclusion of a few experienced first team players.

This added experience could not stop a very determined and committed Arches side that had set their sights on reaching the final this year having got so close last year.

The winning margin of 33 shots looked a comfortable win for the Stena Line sponsored Five Arches team, but it was a tight game on three rinks, while Roy Powling's rink romped away to a 31-shot victory. Although the biggest shots margin came from Roy's squad, it was the overall team performance across all rinks that won the game and a place in the final for the Arches side.

Skip Jon Hubbard and his team were always out in front and won by three shots, although St. Katherine's ran them close, pulling back seven shots in the last three ends.

Lee Richards's rink had to battle all evening for a draw, having looked like losing with three ends to go. Two single shots and an excellent count of two on the last end were just reward for some good bowling by all.

Skip Roy Powling and his men were on form, winning 17 ends and dropping just four single shots in their 35-4 win. They had one winning run of eight ends, scoring 18 shots without reply.

Tony Brown and his team played well throughout in a very tight game. On the penultimate end, they scored four to go into the final end three shots ahead, only for the St. Katherine's rink to pull those four shots back and win the game by one.

The final of the SA Brain Cup will be played at Pembroke Dock on Saturday, August 15.

Rink scores (Five Arches first, St. Katherine's skips only) were as follows:

E. Maher, C. White, M. Gouldingay, J. Hubbard 20; D. Warr 17.

K. Williams, B. Cloake, K. Lloyd, L. Richards 20; D. Hastings 20.

R. Hurlow, T. Powling, G. Beynon, R. Powling 35; M. Lloyd 4.

L. Rees, C. Webb, A. Hooper, T. Brown 18; S. Slade 19.

Tenby 107 (14 pts.)

Milford Haven 65 (0)

The Layton and Co Solicitors sponsored Tenby team were back in league action against Milford Haven last Saturday.

With home advantage and the knowledge that a good result would maintain the top spot, a confident Tenby team took to the green.

Rink one saw Gerald Hewitt, Bert Barnikel, Luke Guymer and Peter Day in the closest contest of the day. The Milford rink were always in contention right up until the last few ends, but Peter and his men just managed to hold their nerve, eventually running out two-shot winners.

Luke Rees, Dai Spencer, Craig Guymer and Andrew Muskett were dominant in the early stages of their contest. The Tenby four powered away from the off, and were at one time 26 shots ahead. Unfortunately, they took their foot of the gas a little over the last five ends, but still managed to come away 15 shots to the good.

Neil Dickinson, Mike Jackson, John Roberts and Dai Kingdon were on rink three. The Tenby rink were always in control, with skip Dai Kingdon making his debut appearance for the home side, a well earned six-shot victory was the final outcome.

Cameron White, Joe Richards, John Baggott and Phil Carpenter were also in fine form. All level at the half-way stage, Phil and his men took it up to another level and destroyed the opposition by 19 second half shots.

This impressive result by 46 shots puts Tenby firmly in the driving seat as league leaders at the halfway point of the season.

Tomorrow (Saturday) sees the Tenby team in Carruthers action against a strong Ammanford Park side, with a 3 pm start.

Rink scores (Tenby first, Milford skips only):

Gerald Hewitt, Bert Barnikel, Luke Guymer, Peter Day 21; B. Howells 19.

Neil Dickinson, Mike Jackson, John Roberts, Dai Kingdon 25; L. Power 19.
