Carruthers Shield
Tenby 118
Fishguard 50
The Layton and Co Solicitors sponsored Tenby team played the last group stage of the Carruthers Shield on Wednesday, May 20.
Fishguard were the travelling opponents in a must win situation for the homeside to ensure qualification to the knock out stages.
Weather conditions were not in both teams favour so they took to the green in various types of headgear and an array of multi-coloured umbrellas.
Neil Dickinson, last minute replacement Ashley Hooper, Craig Guymer and skip Pat Currie, were quick to adapt to the conditions. Only dropping six ends all match, the Tenby four cruised to a convincing 16-shot win.
Luke Rees, captain Dai Spencer, Jon Webb and Andrew Muskett were on top throughout their encounter. Racing away to an early lead, Andrew steered his rink to an impressive 18-shot victory.
Gerald Hewitt, Doug Silcox, John Baggott and skip Peter Day were drawn on rink five. The Tenby four soon got to grips with the rink and emerged from the contest 14 shots the better.
Cameron White, Joe Richards, John Roberts and Simon Evans were also dominant in their match. Nip-and-tuck in the early stages, but the Tenby foursome then powered away in the latter stages winning by a 20-shot margin.
A win for Tenby by 68 shots was the final outcome, which now means the Seasiders, after three straight wins, go through to the next round of the Carruthers. The date for the next round will be at Tenby on June 20, opponents still to be decided.
Rink scores (Tenby first, Fishguard skips only) were:
Neil Dickinson, Ashley Hooper, Craig Guymer, Pat Currie 29; R. Thomas 13.
Luke Rees, Dai Spencer, Jon Webb, Andrew Muskett 27; D. Hughes 9.
Gerald Hewitt, Doug Silcox, John Baggott, Peter Day 28; T. Jones 14.
Cameron White, Joe Richards, John Roberts, Simon Evans 34; T. Evans 14.
Saundersfoot 57 (0)
Tenby 94 (14 pts.)
The Layton and Co Solicitors sponsored Tenby team were in local derby action on Saturday, May 23. A trip down to Saundersfoot was the order of the day, and with the home side the only team to beat Tenby in the league last season, a good contest was a certainty.
First up were Luke Rees, Dai Spencer, Jon Webb and Andrew Muskett. Close early on, the Tenby rink then managed to get a foothold in the latter stages to win deservedly by 13 shots.
Cameron White, Joe Richards and John Roberts were skipped by Simon Evans. The opening salvos were once again close, but Simon and his men took control on end five, resulting in a comfortable 11-shot victory.
Neil Dickinson, John Baggott, Craig Guymer and Phil Carpenter were drawn on rink three. This contest was tight all the way through, but the experience and guile of skip Phil steered the Tenby men to a five-shot win.
Gerald Hewitt, Doug Silcox, Luke Guymer and skip Peter Day were always in the ascendancy in their match. Racing into an early lead gave Peter and his men the platform to run out comfortable eight-shot winners.
A very good win for the Tenby team claiming all 14 points on offer, and revenge for last year's defeat.
Rink scores (Tenby first, Saundersfoot skips only) were:
Luke Rees, Dai Spencer, Jon Webb, Andrew Muskett 26; M. Dennis 13.
Cameron White, Joe Richards, John Roberts, Simon Evans 25; B. Dennis 14.
Neil Dickinson, John Baggott, Craig Guymer, Phil Carpenter 17; S. Dick 12.
Gerald Hewitt, Doug Silcox, Luke Guymer, Peter Day 26; S. Poole 18.
Tenby 108 (14 pts.)
Pendine 45 (0)
The summer finally came to Tenby last Saturday with the Layton and Co Solicitors sponsored Tenby team entertaining visitors Pendine in a league encounter.
In sweltering conditions ideal for bowling, the Sutton Street side were looking to maintain their early season good form.
Top rink of the day was Gerald Hewitt, Doug Silcox, Jon Webb and Peter Day. All four Tenby players were on top form, with Webby the pick of the crop, an incredible 31 shots was the winning margin.
Luke Rees, Dai Spencer, Andrew Muskett and Phil Carpenter were on rink two. The home foursome just seemed to do enough, without really setting the place alight; a 12-shot victory was the final outcome.
Cameron White, Joe Richards and John Roberts and Simon Evans are the rink that is in tremendous form and firing on all cylinders at the moment. Another solid performance from Simon and his men saw them come away 15 shots the better.
Rink four was made up of Neil Dickinson, Michael Jackson, John Baggott and skip Pat Currie. This was a really tight contest with Pendine skip DKT on top form, but Pat held his nerve and crept over the line by five shots.
So another league win for Tenby and once again a maximum haul of 14 precious points.
Tomorrow (Saturday), the Tenby boys travel to Haverfordwest to play their second team, Castle, starting at 2 pm.
Rink scores (Tenby first, Pendine skips only) were:
Luke Rees, Dai Spencer, Andrew Muskett, Phil Carpenter 27; M. Dix 15.
Gerald Hewitt, Doug Silcox, Jon Webb, Peter Day 39; S. King-Thomas 8.
Cameron White, Joe Richards, John Roberts, Simon Evans 27; M. Evans 12.
Neil Dickinson, Michael Jackson, John Baggott, Pat Currie 15; D. King-Thomas 10.
FIVE ARCHES 112 (14 pts.) ST. KATHERINES 47 (0)
Five Arches secured the maximum 14 points in their league encounter with St. Katherine's on Sunday to put them in provisional pole position in Division Two after five games.
The hot, sunny conditions of the previous few days made the green extremely quick and it needed just the slightest touch to send the bowls racing towards the jack.
It was literally touch bowling and it was the speed of the Tenby green that took St. Katherine's by surprise as most of their team failed to adjust their game, giving the Stena Line Five Arches side the advantage needed to secure a 65-shot win.
On rink two, the Arches team skipped by Lee Richards had to battle for much of the game and it was not until the 19th end that they got in front for the first time.
With Lee's vocal encouragement and tactical changes, his team of Ken Lloyd, Aaron Lloyd and Graham Hill held on to win by two shots.
Roy Powling skipped on rink three, a rink that many find very difficult to play, but Roy and his team of Ron Hurlow, Tony Powling and Gwyn Beynon mastered the rink and the conditions to win by 19 shots, losing just six ends during the game.
Two changes were made to Tony Brown's rink from the team that won at Whitland last week. Eamonn Maher came in at lead and returning after a long absence out of the game was Clive Webb who slotted into the number two position. Both played well throughout and were supported by the ever-dependable Ashley Hooper. Tony and his team got off to a flyer and after 12 ends were 16 shots up. St. Katherine's briefly got back into the game, winning the next five ends, but this was just token resistance, with the Arches rink going on to win by nine shots.
Rink five was the place to be. The Arches quartet skipped by Jon Hubbard won by an impressive 35 shots and in doing so won 17 ends. This win was not only about Jonno, who is in great form, but about the support play from Stuart Askew, Neil Hensman and Mike Gouldingay, as you do not pick up seven shots in one end without everyone contributing.
This was a good performance from the Arches side against an under-strength St. Katherine's team. Tougher challenges lay ahead.
Rink scores (Five Arches first, St. Katherine's skips only) were as follows:
K. Lloyd, A. Lloyd, G. Hill, L. Richards 18; D. Hasting 16.
R. Hurlow, T. Powling, G. Beynon, R. Powling 28; D. Mathias 9.
E. Maher, C. Webb, A. Hooper, T. Brown 23; A. Robson 14.
S. Askew, N. Hensman, M. Gouldingay, J. Hubbard 43; M. Lloyd 8.
