FIVE ARCHES 90 (12 pts.) PEMBROKE DOCK MARINERS 74 (2)

This fixture against Pembroke Dock Mariners was always going to be a difficult game for the Five Arches team playing against a side that graced the first division last season.

The Mariners took to a very windy Tenby green with a wealth of bowling experience running through all four rinks and it is a credit to the Arches side that came away from the game with 12 of the 14 points secured.

It would be wrong to underestimate the importance of this win so early in the season. The Stena Line sponsored Five Arches side knew that they could play better than in previous weeks and their overall performance against a strong Mariners team showed that they have the ability to win difficult games.

Roy Powling, back from a sunshine break, was always in control on his rink winning by 11 shots. His team of Ron Hurlow, brother Tony and Gwyn Beynon were always out in front and such was their dominance that they only dropped six ends against a very experienced Mariners skip.

Ken Lloyd, Ben Cloake, Lee Richards and Graham Hill were drawn on rink three. The Mariners got off to a flying start and were nine shots up at the break with the Arches boys struggling to find their rhythm, but they fought back to win 11 shots in the next four ends. The game was now very even and could have gone either way, but for some great middle order bowling from Ben and Lee that proved decisive in securing a four-shot win.

Jonathan Hubbard skipped rink four supported by Stuart Askew, Neil Hensman and Rob Wilkins. Jonno's rink played well winning the first five ends and 13 in total during the game, but still went down by three shots. The Mariners were a strong foursome and built up some good scoring heads and had it not been for Jonno coming in with his last two woods to reduce the score or even to win the end, the result of the game could have been completely different.

Tony Brown was support by Aaron Lloyd, Jim Taylor and Ashley Hooper on rink four. Tony and his team got off to an excellent start and after just three ends were 11 shots up and looking good for a comfortable win, but the Mariners rink, skipped by Gerard Thomas and supported by county president Arthur Jarvis, fought back and with a couple of threes and a two the Arches were now just two shots ahead with five ends to play. At this stage, the game could have gone either way, but in the end, it was the Arches quartet that prevailed to win by four shots.

The Five Arches next league fixture is away against Whitland Borderers on Sunday.

Rink scores (Five Arches first, Mariners skips only) were as follows:

Tenby 131 Norwest 85

On Thursday, May 14, the Tenby bowlers of the mixed kind entertained six rinks of experienced bowlers from the Norwest Bowls Club in Somerset, established in 1928 - nearly as old as Tenby (1923).

Their club badge depicts their close affiliation with coal mining. It includes the Davey Lamp, a canary and the cage lifting equipment, Norwest was probably the name of the colliery, now defunct like many other pits.

Being regular tourists, they appreciated the high quality of our bowling green, which is currently a dream to play on.

Rink scores (Tenby first, visiting skips only) were:

S. Taylor, C. Lloyd, T. Brutnell, B. Barnikel 28; A. Morgan 8.

P. Barnikel, M. Skyrme, T. Powling, T. Brown 16; K.Wilkinson 19.

H. Ebdon, G. Beeken, K. Lloyd, D. Brown 23; B.Hancock 19.

S. Askew, E. Maher, G. Brutnell, G. Beynon 27; G. Webber 8.

H. Meades, L. Hilling, R. Wilkins, L. Evans 20; J. Doughty 14.

B. Winstone, D. Rees, M. Draper, J. Hubbard 17; J. Panes 17.

A great day was had by all, icing on the cake was past president Lewis Hilling entertaining with a few uproariously fun jokes, reminding us of good times under Lewis's stewardship over many years.  Lewis then presented the opposing captain with a beautifully etched  glass whisky tumbler from the Tenby bowlers to mark the occasion, which was played in fine summery weather.

Carruthers Shield

Milford Haven 59

Tenby 105

Last week, the Layton and Co Solicitors sponsored Tenby team travelled to Milford for the second match in the Pembrokeshire group stages of the Carruthers Shield.

With victory against Whitland the previous week under their belt, a good win would go a long way to qualification for the next round of the shield.

Rink one consisted of Luke Rees, Dai Spencer, Jon Webb and Andrew Muskett. A solid start from Andrew's men built the foundation for a comfortable 11-shot victory.

Gerald Hewitt, Doug Silcox, Luke Guymer and skip Peter Day were always in charge in their contest. The Tenby four got into an early lead and never looked back finishing up with an impressive 17-shot margin.

Cameron White, Joe Richards, John Roberts and Simon Evans were drawn on rink three. The Tenby four were one shot to the good after 17 ends, but Simon and his rink then stepped up a gear to win all the remaining ends, and clinch a nine-shot win.

Last up were Neil Dickinson, John Baggott, Craig Guymer and skip Pat Currie. A close start, but after the half-way stage, Pat and his men pulled away to close the game out by nine shots and give the Tenby team a clean sweep on every rink.

With a 46-shot victory and maximum points from their two Carruthers matches, Tenby now only require a win against Fishguard to qualify for the knockout stages of the competition.

Rink scores (Tenby first, Milford skips only):

Gerald Hewitt, Doug Silcox, Luke Guymer, Peter Day 27; B. Howells 10.

Luke Rees, Dai Spencer, Jon Webb, Andrew Muskett 25; L. Power 14.

Cameron White, Joe Richards, John Roberts, Simon Evans 29; T. Ellyatt 20.

Neil Dickinson, John Baggott, Craig Guymer, Pat Currie 24; R. Thomas 15.

goscar 16

pembroke dock pater 22

This was Goscar's first home game of the season and Pater proved strong opposition.

Up to tea, the teams were equal, however, afterwards, Goscar's luck changed with two ends where the jack was smashed out of the head when the home team had strong position.

Pater were too strong over the last three ends and were worthy winners.

Goscar team: Ray Hine, Eamonn Mayer, Ted Brocknell, skip Harold Ebdon.
