Darts report
After a two-week lay-off, the bowlers were anticipating a close match against local rivals the Sailing Club.
Mike provided his usual fine start and wins by big hitters JR and Phil gave them a healthy 3-0 lead. The Sailing Club hit back to win the next two singles, but Tony continued his recent run of form to make the score 4-2 to the bowlers after the singles.
Phil and JR teamed up to win the first doubles and clinch the match, but again the Sailing Club hit back to win the final two doubles to leave the final score 5-4 in the bowlers' favour.
Many thanks to Chris for providing the refreshments and congratulations to Cameron for winning the pasta eating competition!
Tonight (Friday) is the final match of the season against the Swan in Jameston - hopefully the bowlers can go out on a bang and avenge their numerous defeats against the Swan this season.
PEMBROKE DOCK PATER 56
FIVE ARCHES 100
The Five Arches team travelled to Pembroke Dock on Sunday to take on Pater in a longstanding friendly fixture. There is a certain affinity between both clubs that reflected in the spirit in which the game was played and the hospitality afforded to the Five Arches players.
The green looked in excellent condition, but it proved challenging, with some difficult runs and lines to master.
It was a good contest, with Five Arches making the better start and at tea were 25 shots ahead, but after the break, Pater came back into the game somewhat, although they never looked like overhauling the Arches side that went on to win by 44 shots.
On rink one, there was the combination of bowlers that had played together many times in the past, but coming together again this season following operations to correct various ailments.
At lead was Ron Hurlow followed by Tony Powling, a natural left-hander now bowling with his right following a shoulder operation. They were supported by Gwyn Beyon and skipped by Roy Powling. The rink was five up by tea and finished the game six shots ahead after a spirited fightback by the Pater rink skipped by Steve Davies.
On rink two, it was Goscar captain Ray Hine leading off, followed by Jim Taylor, who, instead of bowling next week, will be entertaining many thousands with his voice at the Albert Hall in London. Jon Hubbard slotted into third, with the rink being skipped by Mike Gouldingay. The rink were always in front, but dropped a four on the 18th end to finish six shots ahead.
On rink three, there was the youthfulness of Aaron Lloyd at lead, followed by the evergreen Rob Wilkins at second, but despite the age gap, the two worked together to produce some good heads for Ashley Hooper and skip Tony Brown to build on. The rink won by 13 shots, but had a period of four consecutive ends when they picked up 13 shots.
On rink four, the game got off to quick start, with the Arches seven up after two ends. This was the first time the rink had played together and like the team itself was a blend of youth and experience.
At lead was Ken Lloyd, followed by the ever-improving Ben Cloake, who at the tea- break could not get off the green quick enough to sample the cakes brought out by the Pater ladies. At third was Lee Richards, with Graham Hill skipping the rink. This 'back end' combination of Lee and Graham worked well, with both using the game to work on their shots. The rink won by 19 shots and had seven ends when three or more shots were recorded.
This was a good result for the Five Arches side and will have given everyone the confidence to begin the Division Two league campaign at Neyland this Sunday in winning ways.
Rink scores were as follows:
R. Hurlow, T. Powling, G. Beynon, R. Powling 22; S. Davies 16.
R. Hine, J. Taylor, J. Hubbard, M. Gouldingay 19; J. Russell 13.
A. Lloyd, R. Wilkins, A. Hooper, T. Brown 27; M. Ronald 14.
K. Lloyd, B. Cloake, L. Richards, G. Hill 32; B. Duncombe 13.

Tenby 108
Kidwelly 98
Tenby entertained bowlers from Kidwelly (and district) on Saturday in another annual early season opener.
After chalking up success against Ammanford the previous week, Tenby were again in good form, running out winners on four out of the six rinks, drawing on one and losing on just one.
Luke Rees, Eamonn Maher, Bert Barnikel and John Baggott led the charge with a 22-11 win over Peter Day-lookalike Matthew Partridge, this year though minus glasses.
Close behind was Peter's rink himself. Helping Peter to a 22-13 win were Neil Dickinson, Ben Cloake and Joe Richards. Unfortunately, we can't report much on this game as Peter - stand-in captain for the day - used the scorecard to write his speech for after the game!
So we went right to the top and asked our own editor for a comment. He said: "The front end played well, the back end played well and the middle end weren't too bad either."
In fact, there seemed to be no end to his comments, so due to lack of space, we had better leave it at that.
There were also five and three shot wins, respectively, for Dai Rees, Ben Simmons, Lee Richards and Graham Hill and Steve Taylor, Cameron White, Ashley Hooper and Tony Brown.
Aaron Lloyd, Clive Webb, Doug Silcox and John Roberts drew, while Ted Brutnell, Neil Hensman, Jon Hubbard and Mike Gouldingay were defeated 27-9.
All in all, it was another enjoyable afternoon's bowling for everyone - let's just hope the sunshine which made another welcome appearance at the Sutton Street green continues throughout the summer!
