Coffee morning
Last Saturday's coffee morning was well-attended. Chairman John Baggott informed everyone of ongoing affairs in the club and thanked all for their input. We all sang 'Happy Birthday' to Lewis Hilling, who attained his 86th year on the Sunday. We were then treated to one of his special jokes, great.
The professionals
Watching the indoor bowling from Potters on TV and seeing Andy Thompson still performing brilliantly, reminded me of a very happy day here, in the Tenby Bowling Club, mid-summer in 1993 (writes B.B.).
A firm was travelling around selected bowling clubs demonstrating hydrotherapy bath units, which proved to be most desirable, as the effect on one's body was simply invigorating, especially if there were any arthritic joints, 'blessed relief'.
As part of the publicity, the sponsors hired two bowling professionals to make the occasion more interesting.
Gary Smith and Andy Thompson duly arrived along with Peter Howells, of the Haverfordwest Bowling Club, to be our compere for the day. We all had lunch at my expense at the Sherbourne Hotel. Included in the party was the then chairlady of our women's section, Gwyneth Batchelor.
Whilst demonstrations of the product were getting underway in the clubhouse, Gary and Andy were inviting members to a challenging five ends, four bowls each. A rare chance to test one's skills against the best.
Gary and Andy both played regularly for the English national team. With Peter Howells doing a running commentary in front of a large crowd, it proved to be quite an exciting afternoon. Highlight was our secret weapon, Eric Dorling. No mean slouch with the spherical objects, county singles champion in his early days, he took on Gary Smith, who was quite unflappable, but to his surprise and everyone's delight, Eric just pipped him to the win. Eric enjoyed that for many months after, our hero!
Several members availed themselves of these units, a form of air massage, and enjoyed every minute for years. Lynn and Keith Delabertoche bought one and they could not wait to try it out. Supplied as part of the kit was a bin-shaped foot spa, so they decided to get going using that. They filled it with warm water, plugged in, (without reading the instructions). Feet in and switched on. Wow! The air was so vigorous, it virtually emptied the foot spa all over the carpet. Happy memories.
