Tenby 91 Morriston Utd 61
Last Saturday saw the Layton & Co Solicitors sponsored Tenby team competing in the last 16 of the Carruthers Shield. Morriston United were the visitors and in front of a large expectant crowd the two teams took to the green. On the show rink were Luke Guymer, John Moffat, John Baggott and Pat Currie. In an exciting match, much to the delight of the crowd, Pat playing at the top of his game and managed to guide his men over the winning line by seven important shots. Rink two consisted of Gerald Hewitt, Doug Silcox, John Roberts and Peter Day. 13-10 to the Tenby four after 16 ends, the opposition rink never managed to score again, and with Peter in scintillating form, they emerged victorious by 11 shots. Terry Howells, Joe Richards, Andrew Muskett and Phil Carpenter were all in top form in their contest. With young Joseph playing at the top of his game, the Tenby foursome took an early lead and raced away to an impressive 22-shot victory. Dai Spencer, Jon Webb, Craig Guymer and Paul Diment were always behind in their match. The Tenby rink dropped a four early on and never really recovered, eventually going down by a disappointing 10 shots. This was a massive win for Tenby, with 30 shots being the difference between the two sides. There is no time to rest on their laurels, though, as they now progress to the last eight, with another tough Carruthers game tomorrow (Saturday) in Penhill, which is situated in the Cardiff area. Coach for this game leaves the Clarence Corner at 11 am - the Blue Army are on their travels again! Rink scores (Tenby first, Morriston skips only): Luke Guymer, John Moffat, John Baggott, Pat Currie 22; C. Harvard 15. Gerald Hewitt, Doug Silcox, John Roberts, Peter Day 21; L. Butler 11. FIVE ARCHES 89 (14 pts) ST. THOMAS 67 (nil)
Last Sunday, Five Arches played host to St. Thomas and what a close game it turned out to be. Although Five Arches won on all rinks, it was a very tight game and at one stage there was only a matter of three shots in it. But Five Arches set out to put the last two defeats behind them to get back on the winning trail. Rink one saw Stuart Askew and Neil Hensman up front with Graham Hill and John Moffat in support. At the interval, they were just three shots in front, but after a very tight second half, stretched their lead to six. Rink two saw Jim Taylor and Rob Wilkins up front, with Ashley Hooper and Ray Holly in support. This rink was involved in a very close game from beginning to end. At the interval, the Arches were one shot in front and that was how it remained at the end. Rink three saw Ron Hurlow and young Ben Cloake up front and Gwyn Beynon and Tony Brown in support. Again they were involved in a very close game, particularly in the first half, being just three shots up at the interval. After that, the Arches pulled away to win by a margin of 13 shots and this rink also went on to win the sweep. Rink four saw young Cameron White come in as lead, supported by Jonathan Hubbard, with Mike Gouldingay and Alex Watt at the back end. Although the Arches were five shots up at the interval, it was a very close game in the second half, they managed to hang on to a two-shot win. Rink scores (Five Arches first, St. Thomas skips only): S. Askew, N. Hensman, G. Hill, J. Moffat 25; N. Brown 19. J. Taylor, R. Wilkins, A. Hooper, R. Holly 19; R. Lewis 18. R. Hurlow, B. Cloake, G. Beynon, T. Brown 24; H. Hicks 11. C. White, J. Hubbard, M. Gouldingay, A Watt 21; T. Harries 19. Many thanks to Five Arches sponsors: Stena Line, Welsh Shop, Tees-R-Us, Millfield Consulting.
Tenby 132 Sutton and District County 75
These tourists from Surrey, deemed that their tour was most successful because they had had no rain at all. This augurs well for the rest of us bowlers because this period included the dreaded St. Swithin's Day. The superstitious are expecting little or no rain for 40 days and nights. Sutton bowlers weren't quite so lucky on the bowling front. The Tenby team were majestic, winning in style. Young Joe Richards, the new Pembroke County Under 25s champion, was blooded, skipping for Tenby for the first and certainly not the last time. Results of the game (visiting skips only) were: K. Williams, H. Ebdon, J. Hubbard, J. Moffat 29; K. Shipland 13. R. Hurlow, D. Rees, L. Hilling, D. King Thomas 33; T. Jocelyne 13. B. Winstone, G. Hill, M. Gouldingay, T. Brown 28; P. Couchman 15. J. Best, J. Taylor, T. Brutnell, R. Holly 23; J. Forrester 21. H. Meades, T. Powling, A. Hooper, J. Richards 19; M. Gray 13. PS. Chris Jenkins has started using our built-in sprinkler system, so perhaps we are going to have a summer!

Good housekeeping
Working in the background with a very low profile, doing those essential menial tasks, are the unsung heroes of any organisation. New recruit Ted Lloyd certainly smartened up our image. Lee Richards was caught inspecting our underground network of drains, a necessary precaution, prior to our Open Week. Archie Rafferty, Jim Taylor, Graham Hill and Stuart Askew all do regular forays around the green, tidying-up. All of our members do appreciate their input. The sale of the humble cups of tea is looked after by the ladies mostly, which is equally desirable. Last, but not least, is our king-pin Lily, who always gives 110 per cent.
Welcome visitor
During the excitement of the Carruthers game, Len Bowker, long-time bowling member of our club, popped in for a flying visit. Len, domiciled in the capital of Wales, certainly looks very fit - he had just finished a walk in the sun, Amroth to Tenby. He was immediately challenged to visit us for a week, not half-an-hour. Great to see him looking so well.
Past hero
One of Tenby town's more talented sons is Roy Powling, a very high classed rugby player in his younger days and a very skilful bowler in later years. Roy has continued bowling up until very recently when the dicky hip said stop. Not to be beaten, Roy has successfully undergone the dreaded hip replacement. All he has to do is survive the severe pumelling by the physios, as they get him mobile again. Hopefully, he will once again grace our green with his presence and enjoy many more happy hours in the sport he loves and has given so much to in the past. Roy regularly skipped for Pembroke County, and has won umpteen county and club trophies.
