Tenby Junior School 'Bowlers'

Tuesday was a red letter day for Tenby Bowling Club on the recruiting front.  Vice-chairman John Baggott successfully steered the first batch of 29 nine and 10-year-old Tenby Junior School pupils through  the obligatory four- hours of 'taster' sessions. All passed the test with flying colours and were presented with the official certificate, recognised by the Welsh Bowling Association.  Club president Bert Barnikel was delighted to introduce Mrs. Julia King-Thomas, president of the Welsh Women's Bowling Association, to present the awards. Julia, who is also a Tenby club member of some standing, was thrilled to be asked to present the 'taster certificates'. Firstly, she thanked John Baggott, Doug Silcox and all of the Tenby coaching staff who are all official Welsh coaches, congratulating them on a job well done. Julia then thanked the members of the staff of Tenby Junior School and the happy looking pupils for their enthusiasm.  Feedback from the coaches indicated that there were several very talented potential bowlers who would benefit from continued coaching and roll- ups with their mates or new friends at Tenby Bowling Club. To this end, the children were advised of the regular Thursday evening coaching lessons for beginners, 6-7 pm. Coaching is free and all the equipment is supplied. For hygiene purposes, new members should wear smooth-soled, heelless footwear, 'pumps', deck shoes etc.   Mr. Michael Scale, teacher, felt he was obliged to respond with a sincere 'thank you' from the junior school for allowing their pupils the opportunity to escape from their regular class work and enjoy this new sport in fine surroundings. Mr. Scale was very impressed with the whole concept, 'the art of bowling', so he might dip his toe in the water and have a go himself!  The club coaches involved were Pauline Barnikel, Lynn Delabertouche, Julia King-Thomas, Lon Evans, John Baggott, Bert Barnikel, Mike Gouldingay, Ron Hurlow, John Moffat, John Roberts, Doug Silcox.

TENBY ST MARY'S 18 PEM DOCK PATER 14

St. Mary's had a good win last Saturday in the Meyrick Owen Shield. Playing in inclement weather, the team of Arron Lloyd, Harry Meads, Ben Cloake and skip Neil Hensman held a strong Pembroke Dock Pater side. Both the juniors played well and thanks to Harry Meads stepping in at the last moment, who had a good game, with Neil Hensman as skip, St. Mary's pulled off a good win which will push them up near the top of the league.

Cam Gears 58 Tenby 96

The Layton & Co Solicitors sponsored Tenby team were on their travels in Carruthers Shield action last Saturday. Cam Gears from the Resolven area were the opponents, so a full coach load of players and supporters made the trip to what was to be a tough test for the men in blue. With the inclement weather also against them, both teams took to the green. First up was Terry Howells, Joe Richards, Andrew Muskett and Phil Carpenter. This was a close battle all the way through, never more than a few shots between them, but the latter stages saw Phil and his men pull away by a creditable seven shots. Luke Guymer, John Baggott, Simon Evans and Pat Currie had to hold their nerve in their contest. Ten- two down after 10 ends, the Tenby four turned it around, amazingly only dropping one end out of the next 11. Fourteen-shots was the winning margin. A similar match was played out on the rink of Gerald Hewitt, Doug Silcox, John Roberts and Peter Day. Peter went 17-7 down, but once again his troops rallied and they never lost an end after that, coming out with a seven-shot victory. Dai Spencer, Jon Webb, Craig Guymer and Paul Diment were drawn on the end rink. With some good bowling, the Tenby foursome shot off to a 14-4 lead, but were then pegged back in the second half. The opposition managed to get back to within one shot, but then Paul spurred his men on to a convincing 10-shot win. Tenby at the halfway stage were a few shots down, but a tremendous push in the last third of the match saw them cruise to a 38-shot win. The team and supporters were in buoyant mood as they travelled home, well watered and fed. It is back to league action tomorrow (Saturday) with an away trip to the Pembroke Dock Mariners. Rink scores (Tenby first, Cam Gears skips only) were: Luke Guymer, John Baggott, Simon Evans, Pat Currie 27; E. Edwards 13. Gerald Hewitt, Doug Silcox, John Roberts, Peter Day 24; R. Carter 17. Dai Spencer, Jon Webb, Craig Guymer, Paul Diment 25; C. Church 15. Terry Howells, Joseph Richards, Andrew Muskett, Phil Carpenter 20; A. Siddeley 13.
