five arches 53 tenby 91

Welcome to a new season of bowling. After a very busy Saturday afternoon when Tenby played Ammanford Park, on Sunday the Five Arches played host to the Tenby side in a fixture which it is hoped will continue as an annual event. Although there were a lot of regular players missing, it gave the juniors a chance to show their skills and they all played extremely well. Captain M. Gouldingay started proceedings off by calling for a minute's silence in memory of Terry Preston, Mike Crockford and Dennis Watkins, who will all sadly be missed. Rink three saw Stuart Askew and Adam Hensman up front against Cameron White and Ashley Hooper, with young Cameron having a very good game. The back end saw Gwyn Beynon and Tony Brown up against Dai Spencer and John Roberts. At the interval, Five Arches were just six shots down, but things got worse in the second half as they eventually went down by 15. Rink four saw Ron Hurlow and Rob Wilkins up against Ben Cloake and Gerald Hewitt, which was a very close game all the way through. In the second half, Ben changed positions with Gerald and his game improved immensely. The back saw Lee Richards, back in the side, up against Doug Silcox, who both had good games, and Mike Gouldingay up against Peter Day, which was also a very close match. At the interval, Five Arches were only one shot down and went on to lose by just two shots in the end. Rink five had Jim Taylor and Jonathan Hubbard up against Neil Dickinson and Bert Barnikel, with both front ends having quite a battle, especially on the last end when Jonathan fired and picked up the jack! Ken Lloyd came in as third, which was a challenge for him, with Ray Holly as skip, and they were up against Terry Howells and Paul Diment. At the interval, Five Arches were only two shots down, but after the Arches boys dropped seven shots in two ends, the Tenby quartet went on to win by 12. Rink six saw Neil Hensman and Luke Rees up front with Graham Hill and John Moffat at the back end. They got off to a very slow start and were 13 shots down at the interval. After that they could never quite get back into it, but held their own to eventually go down by 12. After the game, captain Mike wished the Tenby side all the best for the forthcoming season in the Carruthers and the First Division. Rink scores (Five Arches first, Tenbby skips only): S. Askew, A. Hensman, G. Beynon, T. Brown 10; J. Roberts 25. R. Hurlow, R. Wilkins, L. Richards, M. Gouldingay 15; P. Day 17. J. Taylor, J. Hubbard, K. Lloyd, R. Holly 14; P. Diment 23. N. Hensman, L. Rees, G. Hill, J. Moffat 14; S. Evans 26.

fishguard 75 FIVE ARCHES 77

Last Sunday, Five Arches, along with two ladies' rinks and a Meyrick Owen rink, travelled to Fishguard on what turned out to be a lovely afternoon, with the sun shining throughout. The bowling turned out to be a very close contest, with everyone enjoying themselves, especially after the previous day in Tenby when it was wet, miesrable and cold. Rink one saw Ron Hurlow and Doug Silcox up front, with Lee Richards and Mike Gouldingay at the back end. It was a very close game all the way through. At the interval, Arches were holding on to a one shot lead and in the end went on to win by four. Rink two saw Stuart Askew and Adam Hensman up front, with Gwyn Beynon and Tony Brown at the back end. Once again this was a close fought contest, with Five Arches being five shots up at the interval and eventually going on to win by four. Rink three saw Neil Hensman and Luke Rees up front, with Graham Hill and John Moffat at the back end. At the interval it was all level and it was still so at the 18th end, but then the Arches dropped a count of five, leaving Fishguard to go on and win by four shots. Rink four saw Ken Lloyd and Cameron White up front with Ashley Hooper and Alex Watt as skip. Five Arches got off to a very good start, being six shots up at the interval. Then they must have had too many biscuits, because Fishguard came back, winning the next six ends to take the game by two shots. The Meyrick Owen rink put up a marvellous show on the end rink, with Ben Cloake and Brian Winstone up front and Cyril Roberts and Ray Hine at the back end. At the interval, it was all level and the second half was almost as close, but eventually Fishguard went on to win by two. Neverthless, well done all of you. It is not often you can go to Fishguard and come away with a win, so congratulations to all who took part for the Arches. Captain Mike thanked everyone for their support in getting this fixture together; he also went on to thank all the juniors who took part, stating they were a credit to the county. Special thanks, meanwhile, went to young Cameron White, who gave up going out to Sunday lunch so that he could have a game of bowls - for that he had a big round of applause. Last of all, Mike finished off by wishing Fishguard all the best for the forthcoming season. Rink scores (Five Arches first, Fishguard skips only): R. Hurlow, D. Silcox, L. Richards, M. Gouldingay 19; T. Jones 15. S. Askew, A. Hensman, G. Beynon, T. Brown 22; R. Thomas 18. N. Hensman, L. Rees, G. Hill, J. Moffat 17; D. Hughes 21. K. Lloyd, C. White, A. Hooper, A. Watt 19; T. Evans 21. Many thanks to Five Arches' sponsors, Stena Line, Welsh Shop, Tees-r-us and Millfield Consulting.

New members and visitors are always welcome.   Gwenith James

Tomorrow (Saturday) sees one of the stalwart members of our club, Gwenith James, who until recently played whist regularly with us, reaching that unique 100th birthday. Gwenith has had a long association with the Tenby Bowling Club. It was through her that ladies' started bowling was started way back in 1961, which is celebrated in July every year. Congratulations from all at Tenby Bowling Club, especially your friends at the whist tables.

Club competitions

Busy bee Lynn Delabertouche reminds us that entries for club competitions, with money, close tomorrow. Don't miss the boat.

Monday evening league

The Monday Evening League, sponsored by Miguel Gonzalez, is hoping to get underway a little earlier this season. This random two-wood triples competition is great fun and an excellent practise session. It is a good chance to meet fellow club members and even learn a little! Members are asked to commit themselves for this coming season, names on the list please, which is on the competitions board. The more the merrier and there are lots of prizes to make it that bit more interesting.

Tenby 123 Kidwelly 108

The Layton & Co Solicitors sponsored Tenby team played their final warm-up friendly last Saturday against Kidwelly Bowling Club. Playing conditions were not the most ideal, with freezing temperatures and steady drizzle throughout the match. First up on rink one were Neil Dickinson, Ashley Hooper, Jon Webb and skip Andrew Muskett. In a match that lasted an age, the Tenby men adapted to the conditions and came out on top by eight shots. Rink two consisted of Luke Guymer, John Baggott, Simon Evans and skip Pat Currie. Luke and his twin brother Craig were returning after a two-year lay- off, but even in the difficult conditions, it was like they had never been away. Pat and his men started slowly, but a total of 18 shots in five ends finished the Kidwelly challenge, and a six-shot margin was the final difference. Gerald Hewitt, Doug Silcox, John Roberts and skip Peter Day were against what looked on paper Kidwelly's strongest rink. This proved to be the case and after a titanic battle, the Tenby rink just lost out by two shots. On rink four, Terry Howells was assisted by Dai Spencer, Bert Barnikel and Craig Guymer. The Tenby four always had control of the game and steadily cruised to a convincing six-shot victory. Adam Hensman, Jonathon Hubbard, Mike Gouldingay and skip John Moffat were on rink five. The Tenby quartet fought valiantly throughout the match, but the Kidwelly rink were too strong, ending up six-shot victors. Rink six was skipped by Tony Brown. With Ken Lloyd at lead, Joe Richards at second and Ray Holly at third, Tony steered his rink to a well-earned four-shot margin. The overall win was 19 shots over the six rinks, confirming Tenby's domination in the early season friendlies. Tomorrow (Saturday) sees the start of the much- awaited league campaign, with the Tenby side entertaining pre-season title contenders Haverfordwest. Rink scores (Tenby first, Kidwelly skips only) were: Neil Dickinson, Ashley Hooper, Jon Webb, Andrew Muskett 25; K. Evans 17. Luke Guymer, John Baggott, Simon Evans, Pat Currie 24; A. Evans 19. Gerald Hewitt, Doug Silcox, John Roberts, Peter Day 14; M. Partridge 16. Dai Spencer, Bert Barnikel, Craig Guymer, Terry Howells 22; R. Davis 15. Adam Hensman, John Hubbard, Mike Gouldingay, John Moffat 15; G. Thorburn 16. Ken Lloyd, Joseph Richards, Ray Holly, Tony Brown 23; M. James 19.
