Birthday Boy

Avid reader of the Tenby Observer and popular Tenbyite, John E. Evans, now of 'Tenby', Saltash, Cornwall, celebrates 93 very full years, and it could not happen to a nicer chap. Happy birthday, John, from all at the Tenby Bowling Club.

Welcome back!

Gerry and Ted Brutnell have popped to the surface again after quite a long holiday 'Down Under' in New Zealand with their family. Lucky devils, they missed all the foul weather we suffered this winter.

Green opening

With the opening of our green at 2 pm tomorrow (Saturday), male members start lining up to play for their chosen team. If the green is deemed ok by Chris Jenkins, play will commence immediately after the official opening. Don't forget the golden rule,  'no pay, no play'.  The men vie for places in the very successful Tenby team or the equally competitive Five Arches team. All are looking forward to some exciting games in both leagues in the fair county of Pembroke.  The ladies', Tenby Five Arches two-rink team, are also looking forward to mixing it with the best in their league in a full season of bowling.  There will be some disruption of the internal rooms near the kitchen for a little while because of the new work being carried out.

Juniors

We will need a very capable successor to Mike Crockford to ensure that the junior development is kept on track. Likewise, it is hoped that all the Tenby bowls coaches will support, as usual, hosting the school children for their 'taster' sessions in 2008.

Friendlies Mike Gouldingay has laid on a feast of friendly matches this season, so please make yourself available for as many as you can. These friendlies are the lifeblood of our very popular club.

Five arches (men's) meeting

Captain Mike Gouldingay has called a meeting to take place in the clubhouse at 3 pm tomorrow (Saturday), after the opening of the green. All members wishing to play for Five Arches in the forthcoming season, are asked to please make an effort to attend.

There is always a plethora of sweets freely on offer, many jokes and a steady flow of raffle prizes, freely given. A nicer body of humans would be hard to find. The bowling club, not to be outdone, has spared no expense in supplying more card tables to accommodate our happy band of whisters. There is still room in our club for happy card players who may be bored out of their minds, staring at the goggle-box. Whist is played twice weekly at the club in Sutton Street, Thursday at 7 pm and Saturday at 2 pm. New members and visitors are always welcome. absent friends

Often in the months of May, June and July, at the bowling green I sit awhile, thinking of friends and days gone by; it always brings a tear to my eye. Memories are made of loved ones, who we dearly miss. We lose so many bowlers to that great bowling club in the sky, only God can tell you why we live, and then we die. Sometimes we don't have time to say goodbye. Those of us at 65 or more, sleeping in separate beds because we snore, but to lose your partner and best friend who you love and adore, at least we are left with memories for evermore. There is no time for sorrow, we are here today and gone tomorrow. To wake up in the morning and see the dawning of a new day, to see the sun go down over Tenby town, we make no fuss, another day for us is a bonus. But never will I forget my absent bowling friends, now playing on God's lush bowling greens in the sky.
