Penultimate Game
With so many of our ladies away on holiday etc, the annual Ladies v Gents match ended up as a mixed game, with Ladies captain Audrey Owens and club captain Mike Crockford having alternate choices from the members available to play. But this still did not stop ladies from asking why they were in Mike's team and gents from asking the same question of Audrey. After the dust had settled, the match was played on a glorious autumnal afternoon. Gwyn Beynon roared into a 13-shot advantage after nine ends, but as always happens, the opposition, in the shape of Pauline Barnikel and her rink, clawed back to finally only go down by seven shots. The two captains had a rare old tussle, with Doris Brown up against husband Tony, both playing at third. Modesty forbids to say who triumphed on the day. The two juniors, Rachel Hensman and Ben Cloake, ended up all-square at the end of the game; these two are certainly ones to watch for the future. Johnathan Hubbard was, as always, in majestic form, It is rare to find Alison Redman on the losing side, but this time she was bettered by Bert Barnikel and his crew by 11 shots. Two lady skips in Mair Marquiss and Vera Williams ended with Mair finishing top by nine shots. Afterwards, everyone retired to the bar for a great buffet prepared by Margaret Robb. Margaret has been hard at it in the culinary department recently, preparing food for the Texaco weekend, the ladies' tournament and previously Gold Cup Week. She now has an avid following of gourmet-minded members who book their lunch when they know she is cooking! Rink scores (Mike's Select first) were as follows: R. Thake, J. Taylor, G. Hill, B. Barnikel 21; B. Winstone, V. James, M. Skyrme, A. Redman 10. S. Askew, B. Simmons, M. Gouldingay, M. Marquiss 22; K. Lloyd, J. Best, L. Evans, V. Williams 13. B. Cloake, J. Hubbard, D. Brown, M. Crockford 20; R. Hensman, G. Brutnell, T. Brown, A. Owens 15. N. Hensman, L. Rees, T. Brutnell, G. Beynon 21; H. Meades, G. Beeken, R. Wilkins, P. Barnikel 14. Final score: Mike's Select 84 Audrey's Select 58.
Food for thought
Now the season has finished, I can let you into a selection secret. Remember the old saying, 'never mind how many woods you have on the kitty, your selection will depend on the committee'! An old proverb by Methuselah, or was it the 'old valley commando Terry Howells', I will leave it up to you dear reader to decide! Tenby 117 New quay 97
This is traditionally the last game of the season, just before Chris Jenkins digs the green up, a sight that always enthralls the visitors. Mair Marquiss, finishing the season in style, always shaded the opponents to come home by three shots; actually they deserved to win by a lot more. Well that's what Ted told me anyway! Gwyn Beynon and his foursome roared into an early lead, but the opposition pegged them back in the later stages of the game, but with Audrey Owens a steadying influence, they held on for a three-shot victory. Only allowing the visitors to score on seven ends, Bert's rink, with Lil Howells and Ginny Beeken thoroughly enjoying themselves in the president's rink scored an eight-shot win. Alison Redman, with Tony Brown in commanding form, scorched home by 12 shots. Not to be outdone, Terry Howells and his crew also won by the same margin. Poor old Rob Wilkins and his rink, nothing went right on the day and they succumbed to an 18-shot loss. Rink scores (Tenby first, New Quay skips only): B. Simmons, J. Taylor, A. Owens, G. Beynon 22; D. Roberts 19. R. Hensman, J. Hubbard, T. Brutnell, M. Marquiss 17; M. Skyrme 14. L. Howells, G. Beeken, M. Gouldingay, B. Barnikel 18; R. Salter 10. S. Askew, A. Hensman, T. Brown, A. Redman 24; L. Evans 12. G. Brutnell, L. Rees, L. Evans, T. Howells 25; G. Evans 13. M. Skyrme, N. Hensman, D. Brown, R. Wilkins 11; G. Rees 29. Corks
Remember, we desperately need corks for the infill of the green surround. We had an excellent response last winter, and they can be left just inside the gate or with 'Simo'. So, when you're next out enjoying a meal at your favourite restaurant, ask them to save the corks for the club- that's what Mark at Carrington's does, so why not follow his example. Whether you're wading through a Peking Duck with sweet and sour chicken and egg fried rice, or steak au poivre, mange tout and garlic potatoes, or a Pat Currie special 'big steak rare, chips and a big- bodied 14 per cent proof Australian red', save the corks!
