Tenby 119 Llandarcy 112 This was a great win for the home side over a strong Swansea team that had recently only just lost to Brynhyfryd in the Carruthers Cup. After a showery morning, the sun shone through to make a wonderful afternoon's bowling. Terry Howells and his foursome roared away to a stunning 30-shot victory, picking up a count of six and three fours. Wily old campaigner Lewis Hilling certainly helped the cause, while Ron Hurlow and Harry Meades did their stuff to help their skip to a great win. A settled friendly rink, with Ashley Hooper again excelling himself and Ted and Reg doing the business 'up front', allowed Bert to control things as skip. They came home with a five-shot advantage. It was one of those days for the 'little general', alias Gwyn Beynon, as nothing seemed to go right for any of the rink, with Dai Rees expressing the thoughts of them all by saying they had a 'wicker' in the opposition. They eventually lost by 13 shots. A strong middle patch by the visitors, when they scored 15 shots without reply, was the undoing of Tony Brown's crew as they suffered a seven-shot loss. Jim Taylor was the pick of Dai King Thomas's foursome as they slipped to an eight-shot defeat. With three ends to go, Mike and his rink were 11 shots in arrears, but a three and a big count of six helped by a two on the last end saw them haul themselves back to finish all-square. All the rink agreed after that they seemed to have played in a bowls introductory course as the opposing skip talked non-stop throughout the game, explaining the reason for each shot. It left Maxi with a severe headache! Rink scores (Tenby first, Llandarcy skips only) were: N. Hensman, B. Winstone, J. Taylor, D. King Thomas 14; R. Smith 22. R. Kennion, J. Hubbard, M. Donoghue, M. Crockford 19; C. Jones 19. H. Ebdon, C. Roberts, J. Best, T. Brown 15; J. Nicholas 22. K. Williams, D. Rees, K. Lloyd, G. Beynon 12; W. Griffiths 25. R. Thake, T. Brutnell, A. Hooper, B. Barnikel 20; T. Richards 15. H. Meades, L. Hilling, R. Hurlow, T. Howells 39; R. Jones 9.
Carruthers SHIELD
NIXONS 69 TENBY 67
The Layton and Co. Solicitors sponsored Tenby team travelled to play Nixons from Mountain Ash in the Carruthers Shield on Saturday. This was always going to be a tough test with a couple of players out and the prospect of a difficult heavy away green. Dai Spencer, Ray Holly, Jon Webb and skip Andrew Muskett were drawn on rink four. The Tenby four kept it tight all the way, but then disaster struck on the 17th end when they conceded a count of five. Still reeling from this setback, the next end saw a four being dropped, which completely destroyed any sort of comeback. Andrew and his men lost in the end by a disappointing nine shots. Pat Currie and his rink of Joe Richards, Peter Hooper and Terry Howells were involved in a very tight contest. There was never more than a couple of shots in it throughout, and the two sides went into the last end at 17 each. With the head changing with every bowl, it came down to the last one, with the Nixons skip just managing to pick up a two on the last end. Neil Dickinson, Bert Barnikel and Terry Preston were skipped by Peter Day on rink five. With Terry Preston in outstanding form, the Tenby four eased into an early lead, and never looked back, running out impressive 10-shot winners. Ashley Hooper, Tony Brown, John Baggott and skip Paul Diment were in the difficult position of last rink on. In a close tussle, Paul and his men knew they had to make six shots in the last two ends to draw the match overall for Tenby. With Paul killing ends to keep the team in it, they dug deep to make up the shots, but unfortunately two on both ends was sadly just not enough. A disappointing loss by only two shots saw the end of this year's Carruthers run for captain Dai Spencer and his Tenby side. Special mention must go the supporters for making the journey and the club for the well wishes received in the build up. Tomorrow (Saturday), Tenby can turn their attentions back to league matters with a home tie against the Pembroke Dock Mariners. Rink scores (Tenby first, Nixons skips only): Ashley Hooper, Tony Brown, John Baggott, Paul Diment 17; A. Davies 18. Dai Spencer, Ray Holly, Jon Webb, Andrew Muskett 13; D. Giles 22. Joseph Richards, Peter Hooper, Terry Howells, Pat Currie 17; D. Prosser 19. Neil Dickinson, Bert Barnikel, Terry Preston, Peter Day 20; M. Williams 10.
BREWERS CUP
ST. CATHERINES 79 (12 pts) FIVE ARCHES 57 (2)
On Wednesday, June 20, Five Arches travelled to St. Catherines with quite a few of their regular players missing, so it was going to be a very hard game, especially after their last game there, when they came away with 12 points. But, as it happened, this time it was the other way round! Rink one saw H. Ebdon and T. Brutnel up front and A. Hooper and M. Gouldingay at the back end. At the interval, it was very close, with the Arches being one shot in front, but then they dropped eight in the next four ends, eventually going down by four shots at the finish. Rink two was the only winning rink of the evening, with D. King Thomas winning the sweep once again. At the front were K. Lloyd and young L. Rees, who were both on form, while J. Taylor, coming in as third, also had a good game. At the interval, Arches were eight shots in front, but after a brilliant fightback from the opposition, D. King Thomas hung on to take the rink by a margin of just two shots. Rink three saw young C. White coming in as lead, with J. Hubbard in support, and M. Donoghue and R. Hurlow at back end. Unfortunately, they could not quite get into the game and, although they were only two shots down at the interval, they eventually finished up 14 shots down. Rink four had H. Meades up front, supported by young B. Cloake, coupled with R. Kennion and J. Moffat at the backend. At the interval, they were just two shots down, but in the finished up losing by six. Rink scores (Five Arches first, St. Catherines skips only): H. Ebdon, T. Brutnel, A. Hooper, M. Gouldingay 13; J. Lewis 17. K. Lloyd, L. Rees, J. Taylor, D. King Thomas 20; D. Mathias 18. C. White, J. Hubbard, M. Donoghue, R. Hurlow 20; M. Lloyd 23. H. Meads, B. Cloake, R. Kennion, J. Moffat 15; D. Smith 21.
DIVISION TWO
CASTLE 73 (4 pts) FIVE ARCHES 78 (10)
Last Sunday, Five Arches travelled to Castle, hoping to put their last game behind them. It was always going to be a very hard game there, considering the Arches only won by two points at home in their last encounter. But in the end, they actually came away with a 10 points to four win. Rink three saw K. Lloyd and A. Hooper up front, supported by G. Beynon and R. Powling. They got off to a very poor start, although they were only three shots down at the interval. They then failed to score for the next five ends, before making a late fightback, but eventually went down by eight shots. On rink four, S. Askew and J. Hubbard were up front, with M. Gouldingay and Mike Crockford, who was in brilliant form, at the back. There was no stopping the Arches on this rink. At the interval, they were 14 shots in front and in the end went on to win by a margin of 18 shots, and also broke the deadlock by winning the sweep. Rink five saw K. Kennion and R. Wilkins up front, with R. Holly and J. Moffat playing third and skip, respectively. This was a very close fought battle right from the beginning. At the interval, the Arches were six shots up, but things got closer in the second half, before the Arches eventually held on to win by three . Rink six had R. Hurlow and T. Brown up front, supported by G. Hill and D. King Thomas. The visitors got off to a poor start and at the interval they were eight shots down. As on rink five, the second half was a closer affair, but the margin stayed the same, with the Arches eventually losing by eight. Rink scores (Five Arches first, Castle skips only): K. Lloyd, A. Hooper, G. Beynon, R. Powling 14; B. Absalom 22. S. Askew, J. Hubbard, M. Gouldingay, M. Crockford 29; M. Codd 11. R. Kennion, R. Wilkins, R. Holly, J. Moffat 20; B. Hall 17. R. Hurlow, T. Brown, G. Hill, D. K. Thomas 15; D. Summers 23.
