We now have a new bell rope for our president's bell, originally given to the club by the Diment family in memory of Bob Diment who was the president of the club for many years. The bell rope was made by 91-year-old Harold King. He learnt his trade working originally on the trawlers fishing out of Milford Haven, working alongside his father. He later joined the Merchant Navy and visited many ports around the world. He has been living in Tenby for 40 years, marrying Mabel Holly, an aunt of our own Ray Holly. When you visit Harold's house, it is amazing to see many items of his wonderful ability in ropework on display. You name it and he can make it out of rope. He has adorned pictures with words, letters, anchors, crowns of flowers etc., all done with intricate skill out of rope in many different sizes, styles and colours. It is an art which is now dying, and Harold's house is a museum to the craft of ropework.

Bonus Ball

Lucky winners this week were Steve Doncaster and Julian Davies.

'Lads and Lassies' from Cumbria 102 What a lovely title as we welcomed these friendly tourists from the Lake District. Mind the welcoming was only social wise, as the home team scorched to a huge win! Rene Silcox led the way as her rink scored 25 shots without reply to record a 25-shot win, with all the rink contributing to the victory. Junior Academy player Ysie White was in scintillating form along with Lynn Deli, playing her first game at third, as they helped Mike's foursome to a 13-shot win. It was the last seven ends that Mike Gouldingay and his crew lost the plot as the visitors clawed their way back to clinch a three-shot win. With all his rink playing well, Bert Barnikel came home by a massive 31-shot margin. There was a strong comeback by the visitors against John Moffet as they tried to snatch victory by scoring nine over the last three ends, but our John is made of stern stuff as he guided the rink to a four-shot win. Vera Williams's foursome lost it over the last five ends as the visitors claimed 13 shots for a 15-shot success. Steady as ever, Gwyn Beynon made sure his crew remained on course for a 10-shot win. Rink scores (Tenby first, visiting skips only) were: H. Meades, G. Brutnell, P. Barnikel, J. Moffet 24; V. Toussler 20. R. Kennion, G. Beeken, J. Taylor, M. Gouldingay 17; W. Harrison 20. Y. On a brilliant hot summer's day, the home side scorched to a 70-shot win over the 'Jacks'. Terry Howells, has seen it all, been there got the t- shirt, skipped for Monmouthshire and Pembrokeshire, and the way he encouraged and cajoled his young third, Luke Rees, was a joy to behold. These youngsters are the future of our club, a fact that Terry is well aware of and goes out of his way to pass on all his vast knowledge of the game to any youngster playing alongside him. It was great to see Dennis Watkins and Mary Draper also helping young Luke. They stormed to a 22- shot win, with the wily campaigner showing all his class. That's a nice write up Tel! Another playing at the top of her game is Irene Silcox and she also involved her two academy players Ysie White and Liz Goldwait in all the action, as they eased to a 13-shot win. A count of six was the undoing of Rob Wilkins and his crew as they went down by three shots. Another academy player on top of his game at the moment is Ben Cloake, as he helped Lon Evans and her rink to a three-shot win. What about that 'veteran' Joe Richards, with Molly Spencer and Dana Rogers in his set-up, they triumphed by a massive 22-shot success. Vi Roberts revelled in the game with the youngsters. Captain for the day Bert Barnikel with 'bubbly' Lillian Howells enjoying the sunshine, along with Gerry Brutnell and academy player Rachel Hensman, came home by 16 shots. This game rounded off a hectic weekend for the club. Rink scores (Tenby first, visiting skips only) were: B. Cloake, R. Hine, K. Lloyd, L. Evans 23; J. Davies 20. R. Hensman, L. Howells, G. Brutnell, B. Barnikel 27; M. Arge 11. C. White, H. Meades, G. Beeken, R. Wilkins 16; J. Llewellyn 19. M. Draper, D. Watkins, L. Rees, T. Howells 30; J. Gender 8. L. Goldwait, N. Hensman, Y. White, R. Silcox 24; G. Mathias 11.

Carruthers clash preview

Tomorrow (Saturday) sees Tenby entertain Sully in round one of the Carruthers Shield, the Welsh inter- club championship. Captain Dai Spencer is optimistic about the game and is obviously hoping for a win which would give the team an away fixture in the next round the following week. "The team itself is on a good run and we are unbeaten in seven games, so confidence is high," said Dai. "We do have a worry in that a couple of our players are injured and might not make Saturday, so we might have to pick from the Five Arches," he continued. "Without their support, Tenby would not have the strength and depth that is required for a successful season. "The furthest Tenby has been in this competition is the last eight so we are hoping to top that this year," he added. Tenby has never played Sully before, but they have played their sister club Barry Plastics, a game which they lost by just one-shot. The game starts at 2.30 pm.
