Bonus ball
This week, our lucky winners were Meryl Cook and Eric Dorling, still putting in appearances to support the lads on the green. Tenby 124 Windsor 70 Monday produced glorious sunshine after a week when games were played in rain and bitterly cold winds. The green was running true and everyone regained the tans that they had developed in the April heatwave. These annual visitors from Penarth had been on a long weekend tour, playing various teams in the county, and they were certainly appreciative of the hospitality and the welcome they received, not to mention the weather! Harold Ebdon was in great form for Roy Powling and his foursome as they eased to a 10-shot win, helped by a count of six on the first end. Graham Hill is in a rich vein of form at the moment and he carried this through in helping Bert Barnikel and his rink to an 11-shot victory. Dai King Thomas, who thought it was a two o'clock start, did not let that deter him as two counts of five and two fours saw him romp away to an 18- shot win. Dai Rees certainly sparkled in the second half. Gwyn Beynon and his crew also picked up a six, and with Jock Best in great form, came home by 16 shots. Things did not go right for Tony Brown and his rink, with the visitors sneaking home after picking up four shots over the last two ends. Captain Mike Crockford and his crew made heavy weather of an eight-shot win, with all the rink knowing that they can put in better performances than this one. It is a heavy fixture laden week this week, with league games on last weekend and the coming weekend, and another friendly on Friday - kick-off for this is 3 pm. Rink scores (Tenby first, Windsor skips only) were: J. Best, D. Watkins, R. Wilkins, G. Beynon 28; M. Jodrell 12. S. Askew, N. Hensman, D. Silcox, M. Crockford 18; J. Alders 10. J. Taylor, D. Tenby 82 Pembroke Dock 65
This was a rearranged Carruthers tie that had been rained off the previous week for the Layton and Co Solicitors sponsored Tenby team. After the setback against Whitland, the Tenby side were in determined mood to up their game against the visiting Pembroke Dock side. Gerald Hewitt, Ashley Hooper, Jon Webb and skip Paul Diment were in fine form in their contest. Paul's men had the better of the opening stages, but the Dock rink came back at them and levelled it by the 16th end. This was the cue for the Tenby men to show their class under pressure; this they did running out four-shot winners. Dai Spencer, Joe Richards, John Baggott and Andrew Muskett all put in solid performances. Andrew and his men always looked in control and with a steady finish emerged seven-shot winners. Doug Silcox, Peter Hooper, John Moffat and Pat Currie were drawn on rink two. Pat's men zoomed into a 17-4 lead after 12 ends, but as is always the case, the Pembroke Dock rink then started to come back at them. With enough of an early lead, the Tenby rink managed to hold on to a three-shot victory. Skip Peter Day and his rink of Neil Dickinson, Bert Barnikel and Terry Preston had a great tussle in their match. Eight shots down on end 14, the Tenby quartet won every end thereafter to pull off an impressive three-shot win. A 17-shot victory was the overall outcome, setting up what would hopefully be a good Carruthers run. Captain Dai Spencer was delighted with his team's 'bouncebackability' after their defeat the previous weekend. Rink scores (Tenby first, Pembroke Dock skips only): Gerald Hewitt, Ashley Hooper, Jon Webb, Paul Diment 21; R. Hissey 17. Dai Spencer Joseph Richards, John Baggott, Andrew Muskett 21; D. Halward 14. Doug Silcox, Peter Hooper, John Moffat, Pat Currie 20; R. Jones 17. Neil Dickinson, Bert Barnikel, Terry Preston, Peter Day 20; B. Dowling 17.
FISHGUARD 72 TENBY 115
It was mid-week Carruthers action again for the Layton and Co Solicitors sponsored Tenby team. After the confidence-boosting home win against Pembroke Dock, Tenby took to the road with the long haul to Fishguard. The weather looked favourable at the outset, but after the start, the heavens opened for the remainder of the match making the bowling conditions very tricky for both sides. Rink one consisted of Doug Silcox, Peter Hooper, John Moffat and skip Pat Currie. Honours were even for the first half, but Pat and his men dug in to grind out a five-shot win. Next up was Dai Spencer, Joe Richards, John Baggott and Andrew Muskett. The Fishguard rink took an early lead, but were pegged back after seven ends. Andrew and his men then put their foot on the accelerator to come away with an impressive 13-shot victory. Neil Dickinson, Bert Barnikel, Terry Preston and skip Peter Day are now starting to fire on all cylinders as was the case last year. Always in the ascendancy in their match, the Tenby quartet were triumphant by 12 shots. Gerald Hewitt, Ashley Hooper, Jon Webb and skip Paul Diment were in dominant form in their contest. Racing away to a 10-shot lead, they slowed a little when the rains came, but once acclimatised, they surged away to a well-deserved 13-shot win. A 43-shot victory was the final outcome which now gave Tenby two Carruthers wins out of two, setting up the final match against Saundersfoot for qualification. Captain Dai Spencer was delighted with the team's performance, especially as they quickly adapted to the adverse weather conditions. Rink scores (Tenby first, Fishguard skips only): Gerald Hewitt, Ashley Hooper, Jon Webb, Paul Diment 34; M. Power 21. Dai Spencer Joseph Richards, John Baggott, Andrew Muskett 32; R. Thomas 21. Doug Silcox, Peter Hooper, John Moffat, Pat Currie 22; T. Evans 17. Neil Dickinson, Bert Barnikel, Terry Preston, Peter Day 27; T. Jones 15. PENDINE 54 (0 pts.) TENBY 105 (14)
After back to back Carruthers victories, the Layton and Co Solicitors sponsored Tenby team returned to the league campaign last Saturday. Pendine was the location as Tenby were once again on their travels. After the 14-point defeat by Whitland, maximum points would be required to start repairing the deficit. Dai Spencer, Joe Richards, John Baggott and skip Andrew Muskett had to dig deep in their contest. Cruising into an early lead, the wheels then fell off, allowing the Pendine rink back into the match. Andrew, though, kept his nerve to close the match out by three shots. Skip Pat Currie could be excused for having his mind elsewhere; Pat, an avid Manchester United fan, had sacrificed his special day to turn out for the Tenby team. With Doug Silcox, Peter Hooper and John Moffat all contributing well, Pat still managed to win by a well-deserved seven shots. Gerald Hewitt, Ashley Hooper, Simon Evans and skip Jon Webb played a waiting game in their contest. Eleven-all after 14 ends, the Tenby quartet suddenly blew their opposition away with seven ends without reply, including a six. With Jon again performing well at skip, ably supported by the returning Simon Evans, the rink won by an exceptional 18 shots. Neil Dickinson, Bert Barnikel, Terry Preston and skip Peter Day were at their imperious best. With Bert and Terry rolling back the years, producing their full repertoire of end-winning shots, Peter cruised to a magnificent 23-shot victory. Fifty-one shots and maximum points was the winning margin, which was exactly what the team needed to keep the title chase up. The week ahead will be an important one for the Tenby squad as they will be pitched away against Saundersfoot twice, in the league tomorrow (Saturday) and the Carruthers on Wednesday. Rink scores (Tenby first, Pendine skips only) were: Gerald Hewitt, Ashley Hooper, Simon Evans, Jon Webb 29; M. Evans 11. Dai Spencer Joseph Richards, John Baggott, Andrew Muskett 19; M. Thomas 16. Doug Silcox, Peter Hooper, John Moffat, Pat Currie 24; J. Griffiths 17. Neil Dickinson, Bert Barnikel, Terry Preston, Peter Day 33; S. King-Thomas 10.
FIVE ARCHES 80 (8 pts.) CASTLE 76 (6)
Last Sunday, the visitors to Tenby to play the Five Arches were the Castle team from Haverfordwest. They hadn't lost a game, so it promised to be a very close match. And, as it turned out, people were not to be disappointed. It was very competitive from start to finish, with the outcome going to the very last wood of the game, which could have gone either way, but Mike Crockford made sure by taking three shots on the final end. On rink four it was touch and go all the way, with young Adam Hensman, in the first half, having a very good game considering it was his first league match. Jim Taylor was always in the head, but Mike Gouldingay and John Moffat had a very hard battle against B. George and B. Hall and in the end went down by four shots. Rink three had a very slow start, but on the 15th end they were four shots up on their opponents. They then got stuck on 15 shots for five ends, before Mike Crockford picked up a three-shot advantage on the last to end with a four shots win overall. Rink one saw Ken Lloyd, Rob Wilkins, Gwyn Beynon and Roy Powling, who were all in good form, have a very close battle against Peter Lewis's rink. On the 20th end, it was 17 each, but Roy unfortunately dropped a two count on the last to go down by that margin. Rink two was the only winning rink, but they won by enough shots to win the game overall. Ron Hurlow and Ted Brutnell, up front, both held their own, but the man of the game was Graham Hill, who was 'walking on water' through the second half, and with Dave King Thomas as skip, they were there at the end to pick up the money for the highest rink. Well done Five Arches; also many thanks to sponsors, Stena Line, The Welsh Shop and Tees-r- Us. Rink scores (Five Arches first, Castle skips only) were: K. Lloyd, R. Wilkins, G. Beynon, R. Powling 17; P. Lewis 19. R. Hurlow, T. Brutnell, G. Hill, D. K. Thomas 28; M. Codd 17. S. Askew, J. Hubbard, T. Brown, M. Crockford 18; D. Summers 19. J. Taylor, A. Hensman M. Gouldingay, J. Moffatt 17; B. Hall 21.
