MIXED FORTUNES FOR JUNIORS

The juniors from the club found themselves facing another very early start last Sunday, when they set off to take part in the Welsh Under 16 Pairs being played at Bridgend. Liam Price and Dana Rogers were still wiping the sleep from their eyes when they took to the green against the strong duo from Dinewfr. Unfortunately the heating had failed and combined with a very fast green, things did not fall their way, with a dropped seven-shot count on the sixth end putting paid to their hopes of a fightback. All credit to both players for sticking to their guns and not throwing in the towel.

Joe Richards with Ysie White as his partner were drawn against the experienced Swansea pairing of Salkeld and Thomas, but brushed their reputation aside, playing some superb woods in the process. Ysie, in her first year of bowls, was calmness personified, making sure that every end she had at least one wood in the head. Joe was only troubled on a couple of occasions, and proved his maturity by playing controlled woods to either save a count or take the shot.

The plaudits they received from fellow players and spectators were well earned. They now find themselves through to the quarter-finals, to be played at Radnor in a few weeks.

Both Joe and Ysie were the first to thank Tony Shaw for the extra hours of coaching he had given them in the lead up to the game. A good crowd of supporters travelled with the youngsters, and despite the horrible weather, the journey home was done in a cheerful atmosphere. whist results
