Corals Tournament

Tenby Bowling Club hosted its annual Corals Bookmakers Pairs Competition on Bank Holiday Monday. The competition consisted of four groups of five pairs battling it out in a round robin format, with the top two from each group qualifying for the latter stages. With the weather conditions staying sunny, although slightly breezy, the group stages saw some fine competitive bowling throughout. A quick lunch was taken and then it was on to a knockout format for the quarter-finals. Again, some close fought contests ensued, but it ended up in disappointment for the four pairings of John Moffat and Audrey Owens, Paul Diment and Vera Williams, Mike Gouldingay and Elaine Shaw and Ray Holly and Lynn Deli. It was now down to the semi-finals and crowd favourite, young Joseph Richards, was still in with a shout, paired up with club chairman Dai King- Thomas. Unfortunately, the duo were just edged out at the death and were joined in the clubhouse with other losing semi-finalists Mary Draper and Jonathan Hubbard, although all four agreed they had had a good run and totally enjoyed it. The final was contested between Tenby pair Terry Preston and Gwyn Beynon and Pendine duo Stuart King-Thomas and Roger Gosnold. The Tenby pair were in control from the start, with the Pendine boys trying everything to claw back, but alas it was not to be for the gallant duo. The presentation was held in the clubhouse with Corals representative, Mel, handing the winners' cheque to Terry Preston and Gwyn Beynon. Losing finalists, semi-finalists and quarter-finalists were also presented with money prizes. So an end to another fine and enjoyable tournament, with special thanks to Corals for their continued support, Lynn Deli for helping to run the competition and Simo in the bar for keeping everyone well refreshed.

Tenby Five Arches 76 Borderers 66 It was a blustery afternoon as the Seasiders made the trip to the border town of Whitland to take on the home team. Not having played for a few weeks, and with some regulars missing, it was not going to be an easy fixture for the visitors. This was certainly the case for Dai Robb and his rink as the visitors found it difficult to master the home green. After 12 ends they were 21 shots to three down, but they hung in there for the good of the team, as Mike and Dai King Thomas, with their rinks, were on a 'bit of a roll'. In fact, Dai King Thomas and his foursome, with Joe Richards in scintillating form, at one point racked up 15 shots without reply, to eventually come home by 13. Mike and his crew, by the 13th end, were 18 shots up, but only managed another two shots to record an 11-shot victory. Young Ryan Jones for the home team certainly showed who was boss at the 'front end' as he played some great woods. It was a great count of five on the last end that ensured Roy a four-shot win, with Gwyn Beynon self-confessing it was not one of his best games. At least he is honest about his performance and a great team player. What was wonderful was the sight of seven youngsters, including our own Joe Richards, all under the age of 14, on the green. It is to Whitland's credit that they actively encourage the youngsters to play and the Whitland team itself must be the youngest in the county. Five Arches are sponsored by Stena Line, and have a busy schedule ahead, with the Brewers Cup now starting. Rink scores (Five Arches first, Borderers skips only): J. Taylor, R. Wilkins, G. Beynon, R. Powling 21; D. Richards 17. T. Brutnell, D. Silcox, T. Shaw, D. Robb 11; P. Wills 27. R. Hine, J. Hubbard, R. Kennion, M. Crockford 22; J. Hammond 11. J. Richards, H. Meades, G. Hill, D. King Thomas 24; D. Lewis 11.

Tenby 110 Tiverton 123 It had to happen sooner or later; the club's mixed friendly team were beaten for the first time in 23 months. It was ironic, as we thought the team on the day was one of the strongest the club had put out for a while, which just goes to show that reputations count for nothing! For once, it was sunshine throughout the match, but not sunshine in the final result for the Seasiders. Gwyn Beynon, with the highly experienced Mair Marquiss playing at third, was cruising, only allowing the opposition to score on five ends, but those ends included a seven, five and four. Val James certainly played her part at second. It was a dour encounter on rink six, with Tony Shaw in scintillating form at third, but he could not prevent Dai Robb and his foursome going down by two shots. Another third in sparkling form was Helen Baggott, but she also could not halt the visitors coming home by seven shots against Dai King Thomas and his rink. A strong looking rink skipped by John Baggott were surprisingly beaten by 10 shots, but counts of six and a five were the undoing of the home foursome. Another third on fire was the visiting one against Mike and his crew. Margaret Skyrme, in only her second game in that position, had her hands full trying to hold Eric Osborne, but the rink never gave up to finally go down by three shots. Bert Barnikel and his rink battled bravely to eventually succumb by six shots. Next up is a team from Bristol next Friday - let's get back to winning ways. Rink scores (Tenby first, Tiverton skips only): E. Shaw, J. Hubbard, M. Skyrme, M. Crockford 15; A. Butler 18. C. Roberts, L. Evans, V. Williams, B. Barnikel 13; K. Wright 19. M. Gouldingay, M.
