TENBY 111 shots CHIPPENHAM 64
What started off as a pleasant afternoon, ended up in a deluge, with Bert Barnikel swimming to the pavilion at the end as his rink slowly disappeared and a pond of water took its place! We welcomed our visitors from the West Country for the first friendly of the season, although the home side were not in a very accommodating mood as they put the visitors to the sword. Roy Powling and his rink scored 10 shots over the last six ends to record an 11- shot victory. After six ends, Mike and his crew were 19 shots to the good without reply. Newcomer Tony Brown and Ray Hine were in good form up front, while back from his holiday in sunny Spain, Roy Kennion went about his job in his inimitable way. The rink came home by 17 shots. Dai Robb and his 'henchman' Tony Shaw, along with Harry Meades and Maxi, came in seven shots to the good. Dai is always cajoling, encouraging and wise-cracking, while Tony is the quiet part of the duo, but still asserts his authority when his skip is on the mat. Nice to see Reg Thake and Bill Bailey on the green again and they were part of a rink skipped by Mike Gouldingay who were 15 shots up when the heavens opened. It takes a good man to keep our Bertie Barnikel down and he guided his men, when the cause looked grim, to a respectable deficit of five shots, before the swimmimg started! Grateful thanks to Pauline Barnikel who stepped in at the last moment when the visitors arrived one short. Rink scores (Tenby first, Chippenham skips only): J. Taylor, R. Thake, B. Bailey, M. Gouldingay 24; R. Delayne 9. H. Meades, M. Donoghue, T. Shaw, D. Robb 20; A. Cooper 11. R. Hine, T. Brown, R. Kennion, M. Crockford 29; H. House 12. S. Askew, H. Ebdon, T. Brutnell, B Barnikel 15; P. Tenby 92 shots Windsor BC Penarth 89 It started out as a rain-filled and cold afternoon, but with no one pulling out from the team, it epitomised the spirit in the club that the team fielded as selected. Gwyn Beynon was in fine form as, helped by his rink, he strolled to a three-shot win. It was a late surge by the visitors that saw them home by one shot over Graham Hill and his rink. Bert Barnikel and his crew squeezed a one shot victory over their opponents. John Moffett was up against it on rink five as they went down by 14 shots, with Jock Best playing his first game of the season. Bill Bailey, with the sublime skills of Terry Preston at third, managed a two-shot win over the visitors. It was a six-shot haul on the 12th end that saw Mike home by 12 shots. Grateful thanks to Gwynfor Davies, Bryn Llewelyn and Dave Greaves who helped the Tenby club out. With so many players away on tour it was hard to field the six rinks, but we did! Another one making his debut was Brian Winstone and he certainly enjoyed himself. Rink scores (Tenby first, visiting skips only): S. Askew, H. Meades, T. Preston, B. Bailey 16; T. Warburton 14. R. Glamorgan may be having their injury problems on the cricket circuit, but they are not the only ones, as the Five Arches suffered a blow last week, when ever-present Tony Powling was ruled out, possibly for the whole of the season, with an injury. Both Tony and brother Roy gave valiant service to Tenby United over many years, and both now enjoy their bowls. But Tony has vowed to come and support 'the boys' when the Arches play at home and enjoy the after-match 'craic' that always ensues after home matches.
