CLUB FINALS DAY

Tomorrow (Saturday) and Sunday sees the culmination of the season's competitions, when the finals take place. If last year's event is anything to go by, it should be a great day. Let's just hope the weather plays its part.

In the men's competitions, in the Senior Cup, Roy Powling takes on Terry Preston, while Roy is joined by brother Tony to compete in the Senior Pairs. Terry is also involved in one of the singles finals as well.

Tenby captain Andrew Muskett and partner Peter Day are involved in both the two and four-wood pairs finals. Needless to say, the talented Guymer brothers are involved, with Craig playing Pat Currie in the Championship Cup. The brothers are in opposition in the triples, when Craig teams up with Sam McNeilly and Mike Crockford against Luke, Jonathan Webb and Pat Currie.

In the ladies, Ceris Hewlings is in the four singles finals and Helen Baggott in three. Alison Redman also figures in one of the singles finals. Helen and Ceris also team up in both the two and four-wood pairs.

Marlene Burn and Margaret Skyrme are in a pairs final, while Marlene teams up with Val James in the Gwyneth Batchelor Pairs final against recent Open Pairs tournament winners, Ginnie Beeken and Gerry Brutnell.

Finals Day nearly brings the season to a close. The end of the season parties and dinners are already organised, with the Tenby team 'do' on Saturday, September 24; the ladies are all going to the Chinese restaurant, and the end of season party for the friendly squad takes place on Friday, September 23. Is there no end to this frivolity and gaiety, we ask? Milford Haven 80 (10 pts.) Tenby 73.75 (4)

Last Saturday was the final league game for the Coastal Cottages sponsored Tenby side away to Milford Haven. Tenby travelled across the bridge a player short due to some key players not available either through illness or attending a function.

Captain Andrew Muskett, Reg Thake and Jon Webb made up a triple due to the absence of one player.

This meant that they would lose 25 per cent of their final total, so a big win was needed to cover this. The Tenby triple raced away into a 23-6 lead and were well in control with four ends to go. What happened next was unexplainable, as the Tenby trio dropped 12 shots over the last ends and with the 25 per cent subtraction lost by 1.25 shots.

Rink two consisted of Dai Spencer, Lee Richards, Terry Preston and skip Peter Day. This was always going to be a tight game against an experienced Milford rink on their own green. It was nip and tuck all the way, but with steady performances from all, Peter and his men managed to nick it by just one shot.

Skip Terry Howells had a makeshift rink due to the absentees. His rink of Gerald Hewitt, young Joseph Richards and C. Berger fought well throughout, but succumbed to a disappointing 13-shot defeat. Last up was the rink of Neil Dickinson, Sam McNeilly, Luke Guymer and skip Pat Currie. Pat and his men moved in front after 10 ends and controlled the game from there on, to run out seven shot winners.

A disappointing end to the season therefore for the Tenby lads. Captain Andrew thanked his players for their support during the league campaign and let's hope a few more players join next year to support both of our fine Tenby teams.

Tenby still have an R. F. Diment Cup semi-final to arrange against Saundersfoot, which will bring the curtain down on another fine bowling season.

Rink scores (Tenby first, Milford skips only) were: Reg Thake, Jon Webb, Andrew Muskett 18.75; T. Elliot 20.

Dai Spencer, Lee Richards, Terry Preston, Peter Day 20; R. Thomas 19. Gerald Hewitt, Joseph Richards, C. H. Berger, Terry Howells 13; E. Sturley 26. Neil Dickinson, Sam McNeilly, Luke Guymer, Pat Currie 22; B. Howells 15.
