PENDINE LADIES 50 FIVE ARCHES LADIES 30
The Five Arches Ladies were defeated on both rinks by Pendine recently. Captain Alison Redman and her rink had a close battle with Marion Stephens and co., but unfortunately just lost out over the last couple of ends, going down by two. Meanwhile, Vera Williams and her crew scored five over the last three ends to get them into double figures, but sadly finished 18 adrift of Carol Jones. Rink scores (Five Arches Ladies first, Pendine skips only) were: L. Delabertouche, G. Beeken, H. Baggott, A. Redman 19; M. Stephens 21. M. Owens, G. Brutnell, A. Owens, V. Williams 11; C. Jones 29.
FIVE ARCHES 100 (12 pts) PENDINE 67 (2)
Stena Five Arches team were rocking around the Bowling Club on Saturday night after their first and emphatic win of the season against old pals and rivals from Pendine, on a very fast and slick green. On rink one, skip Doug Silcox (replacing Roy Powling, who was playing in the Over 60s pairs with Terry Preston and winning the county final), ably led by Stewart Askew, with Tony Powling and Gwyn Beynon assisting, had a ding dong fight with Jack Griffiths and won by 29 shots to 21. Rink two saw the King Thomas brothers playing each other, David for the Arches and Stewart for Pendine. For Pendine, lead Mal Bix, second Jim Lloyd and third Roger Gosnold gave David a few headaches. Nevertheless, he was only only 15-14 down on the 15th end, but then dropped a six to eventually lose out 26-19. On rink three, Bill Bailey, Maxi Donoghue, Cyril Roberts and Lewis Hilling were too consistent for Mal Evans's boys and won 27-12. Last, but not least, rink four, led by Jim Taylor, Harry Meads, Jonathan Hubbard and Rob Wilkins were in scintillating form against poor Malcolm Thomas and ran out 25-8 winners. Next game is tomorrow (Saturday) against club mates Tenby, followed on Sunday by an away fixture at Neyland.
FIVE ARCHES LADIES 70 PENDINE LADIES 21
This was an excellent win for the Five Arches Ladies against Pendine on home soil after they lost to them away. Marnie Owens, Audrey Owens, Val James and skip Vera Williams only allowed their opponents to score on six ends as they cruised to a 27-shot win. Lynn Delabertouche, Ginny Beeken, Helen Baggott and skip Alison Redman were also in cracking form. Only four in it at tea, the Arches went up a gear in the second half, scoring 16 shots without reply as they powered home to a 33-11 victory. Rink scores (Five Arches Ladies first, Pendine skips only) were: M. Owens, A. Owens, V. James, V. Williams 37; A. Stewart 10. L. Delabertouche, G. Beeken, H. Baggott, A. Redman 33; C. Jones 11.
WHITLAND LADIES 46 FIVE ARCHES LADIES 38
Away at Whitland recently, the Five Arches Ladies won on one rink and lost on the other, but unfortunately lost the match overall. Flying the flag for the Arches, captain Alison Redman and her rink chalked up a 10-shot win against Cally Jones, but Whitland hit back with Andrea Thomas's strong combination beating Vera Williams 32-14. Rink scores (Five Arches Ladies first, Whitland skips only) were: L. Delabertouche, G. Brutnell, H. Baggott, A. Redman 24; C. Jones 14. M. Owens, G. Beeken, A. Owens, V. Williams 14; A. Thomas 32.
TENBY 113 CHAMALEONS 76
This was going to be a tough fixture for the home side if they were going to maintain their unbeaten tag for friendly mixed games. With the Five Arches ladies playing in the evening, the Monday night men's triples also being held, the selectors had to call upon members who did not bowl regularly and some who had retired from the bowling scene! But two of the rinks produced big wins to cover the losses of the losing rinks. One of those who answered the 'calls to arms' was Phyllis Jones, who played manfully all afternoon. Lil Howells, who has only recently taken up the game, will develop into a good player the more she plays, and as for enthusiasm, she has it in bucketfuls! Opposing captain Mike Barker was in commanding form, and try as they might to stem the flow, Chris and Mike had to concede defeat in the end by 12 shots. Despite picking up a five on the last end, Gwyn Beynon and his rink went down by six shots. Mary Draper played well as lead ably supported by Denis Watkins. There were no holding Mair Marquiss and her crew as they stormed to a 25-shot win over the visitors. Doug Silcox revelled playing in his old position as lead, with Harry and Graham giving solid support. Joan Dorling and her crew only allowed the opposition to score on four ends as they romped to a 21-shot victory, Steve Taylor laying the foundation with some impressive leading. Terry Howells, well supported by Bert Barnikel, put in a strong finish to seal a win by nine shots. Although the club is down on playing members this season, the spirit in all the teams, league and friendlies is second to none. Anyone interested in taking up the sport will have a great welcome. Even though the season is well advanced, there is still an opportunity to take up the game. A great win for the seasiders over a strong visiting team. Rink scores (Tenby first, visiting skips only): C. Roberts, P. Smith, B. Barnikel, T. Howells 24; T. Headford 15. S. Taylor, J. Taylor, P. Barnikel, J. Dorling 26; D. Crawley 5. D. Silcox, H. Meades, G. Hill, M. Marquiss 35; L. Fisher 10. M. Draper, D. Watkins, L. Evans, G. Beynon 19; M. Weeks 25. P. Jones, L. Howells, C. Morgan, M. Crockford 9; M. Barker 21. TENBY 125 DUKE OF KENT (london) 110
Unbeaten on their tour of the county, these tourists from the London area were hoping to return home with their record intact. But the home side had other ideas as they inflicted a 15-shot defeat upon them. The score would have been bigger if it had not been for a thumping on the home captain's rink, where the home side were comprehensively outbowled by the visitors. Even allowing for the odd slice of luck, there were no excuses by the home foursome. A strong rink skipped by Ray Holly came home by nine shots, with everyone contributing to the win. Despite dropping a five on the last end, Dai King Thomas and his crew came home by two shots, with Maxie Donoghue in fine form. A solid all-round performance by Gwyn Beynon and his men saw a win by 12 shots. Skip for the first time, Dai Spencer, aided by the vastly experienced Bill Bailey and with Neil and Reg doing their bit up front, recorded a 10-shot win. Called in at the last moment, ex-president Lewis Hilling did nothing wrong as he helped Terry Howells and his rink to a narrow one shot victory. This was a great result for the Seasiders over a strong and experienced visiting team. Captain Mike came in for some 'stick' after the game, as he thanked his team for 'carrying' him and his rink! Rink scores (Tenby first, visiting skips only): L. Hilling, P. Smith, D. Silcox, T. Howells 20; R. Riddick 19. N. Dickinson, R. Thake, B. Bailey, D. Spencer 23; I. Yates 13. S. Askew, T. Powling, R. Wilkins, G. Beynon 28; K. Woodgate 16. S. Taylor, H. Meades, M. Donoghue, D. King Thomas 21; B. Norris 19. G. Hewitt, C. Roberts, T. Preston, R. Holly 22; S. Savage 13. J. Taylor, D. Watkins, B. Best, M. Crockford 11; T. Lodwick 30.
