Best wishes

Members and fans of the Tenby Bowling Club wish their Carruthers Shield team every success in that annual steep climb to reach the pinnacle of the Welsh final at Llandrindod Wells in August. They play in possibly five knockout rounds, against predetermined areas throughout Wales. Tomorrow (Saturday), the team, led by captain Andrew Muskett, travel to Pentyrch in Cardiff to test their mettle in the first hurdle of this popular Carruthers Shield national tournament. The team is playing well and hopes are very high - good luck.

Ladies Bowling

Threaded amongst the hectic schedule of male bowling in the county of Pembroke, is the equally frenetic women's bowling. Most afternoons throughout the county there will be ladies's club teams battling in the Pembrokeshire League, all enjoying themselves. Then comes the serious bowling when the West Wales Ladies Bowling Association take over the greens with inter-county matches, plus the ladies competitions, singles, pairs, triples and fours. The various knock-out rounds are played at the same time on pre-selected greens.  This Sunday, June 19, at 9 am, will see the WWLBA two-wood singles competition on the Tenby green.

New Members

Living in the Tenby area there are probably many potential bowlers, ladies and gents, young and old, who would enjoy the sport of lawn green bowling. The Tenby green is one of the finest playing surfaces in Wales and the Tenby management regularly invite interested parties to try their hand at this very ancient game of skill - the Tenby club contains several official Welsh bowling coaches willing to give three free coaching lessons to encourage same. Numbers have declined recently as the older generation fades away, so we are seriously recruiting... come and have a go. Ring 01834 844232 for more information.

Tenby 97 (12 pts) Five Arches 53 (2)

The Coastal Cottages sponsored Tenby team were in league action last week against the Five Arches. The Tenby side were keen to carry on the good form from the previous weekend's victories, thus consolidating a good position in the league. Both teams were eager to lock horns as this was about as local as any derby could get. Rink one consisted of Luke Guymer, Reg Thake, Terry Preston and skip Terry Howells. Terry's rink got off to a slow start and were always in arrears from the off. This was always going to be a tight match, with never more than a couple of shots in it, but in the end Arches skip Rob Wilkins managed to steer his side to a creditable five-shot victory. The relatively new rink of Neil Dickinson, Dai Spencer, Peter Hooper and skip Peter Day were pitched up against Arches captain Dai King- Thomas. The new boys gelled well together, playing some nice bowls, and with Peter impressive at the helm they cruised to a comfortable victory. Steve Taylor, Bert Barnikel, Craig Guymer and skip Pat Currie were always in control of their encounter. With impressive performances throughout, Pat and his men ran out 15-shot winners. The same can be said for captain Andrew Muskett's contest. His rink of Lee Richards, Jon Webb and Mike Crockford were always in the ascendancy and finished up 13-shot victors. The result was that Tenby ended up comfortable winners, but as always, the match was played in the best of spirits throughout. Captain Andrew was upbeat as after a somewhat rocky start his team seem to be picking up momentum and points towards the higher echelons of the league table. Rink scores (Tenby first, Five Arches skips only): Luke Guymer, Reg Thake, Terry Preston, Terry Howells 19; Rob Wilkins 24. Neil Dickinson, Dai Spencer, Peter Hooper, Peter Day 29; Dai King-Thomas 8. Steve Taylor, Bert Barnikel, Craig Guymer, Pat Currie 27; Roy Powling 12. Lee Richards, Jon Webb, Mike Crockford, Andrew Muskett 22; Bill Bailey 9.

Tenby 96 (12 pts.) St. Issell's 59 (2)

It was another home match for the Coastal Cottages sponsored Tenby team last Saturday. The visitors were St. Issell's, who had also agreed to double up this league encounter with the R. F. Diment Cup match that was scheduled between the two sides. On rink one, skip Terry Howells was back with a vengeance. His rink of Luke Guymer, Graham Hill and Terry Preston blew away their opposition by an impressive 17 shots. Pat Currie, who is the in-form skip at the moment, again comfortably sailed to victory. The rink of Neil Dickinson, Bert Barnikel and Craig Guymer were all instrumental in their 14-shot win. It was a much closer affair on the rink of captain Andrew Muskett. Lee Richards, Jon Webb and Mike Crockford all contributed well, but were just edged out at the death by just a single shot. Dai Spencer, Reg Thake, Peter Hooper and skip Peter Day raced away to a 15-2 lead with some excellent bowling in their match. The second half saw the Dave Robb rink come back at them, but with Peter now playing the full repertoire of skip shots, he had the class to guide his rink to a seven- shot victory. Captain Andrew was once again pleased with his team's performance on the day. Tenby were content in the knowledge that they had bagged 12 league points and also progressed to the quarter finals of the R. F. Diment Cup. The Tenby team have another big encounter on Saturday when they are involved in the Carruthers Shield competition away to Pentyrch, near Cardiff. Good luck to all. Jenkins 15. Lee Richards, Jon Webb, Mike Crockford, Andrew Muskett 17; J. Moffat 18. Dai Spencer, Reg Thake, Peter Hooper, Peter Day 21; D. Robb 14.
