Congratulations

Ted Brutnell, currently treasurer of Tenby Bowling Club, has successfully qualified as a first class Welsh bowling umpire; no mean feat these days - only five passed out of the 15 candidates on this year's course. Well done Ted. Ted joins the shrinkling rank of umpires nationally and will help to spread the load for his fellow club members who are also Welsh umpires - Julia King Thomas, Bert Barnikel, Peter Hooper, Alan Redman and Doug Silcox.  Umpiring is a requirement at all serious bowling events in Wales, indoor and outdoor. The quality of the bowling is usually of a very high standard and worth watching, which the umpires enjoy next to actually playing.    Whist Results

TENBY 86 (14 pts) MILFORD HAVEN 45 (0 pts)

The weather was more suited to rugby than bowls, as it rained and drizzled all the game through. The seasiders were anxious to maintain their winning ways, after the victory over Whitland the day before. Captain Andrew Muskett, who is so passionate about his team, and leads by example, whilst at the same time exhorting his side to greater deeds, was again in great form. New father, Neil Dickinson ("I forgot the baby food today") had another good game, along with Ray Holly, who was called into the side due to late withdrawals. Peter Day is now settling into the role of skip, and gelling well with Peter Hooper - someone must give him help on flag duties. The rink came home by eight shots, only allowing the visitors to score on seven ends. Andrew and his men won by eight shots, but a lot was left to the captain on more than one occasion to pull the rink out of the mire. A strong middle patch for Pat Currie and his crew, when they scored 11 shots without reply, saw them home by 11 shots. All the rink contributed to the win and with Luke Guymer setting the tone with some great bowling at lead, the two Terry's, Preston and Howells, were in sparkling form to romp home by 14 shots. Reg Thake, who was later fined by the captain for his tentlike coat, also played his part in the victory. The only downside of the afternoon was when Pat Currie delivered a wood with the wrong bias. This was kept very quiet from most of the team, until Reg informed everyone after the game - and you've guessed it, he was fined. This was an unfortunate weekend for Pat, on the social scene anyway, as he was fined twice at Whitland for various heinous crimes! A word of warning to club members - don't let Lee Richards start using big words to you, as he will tie you up in knots while explaining the meaning to you, as Mike and Graham found out during the game. He explained that articulate was not a big lorry, but someone who was expressing themselves fluently. It is amazing what you pick up and learn on the bowling green! Rink scores (Tenby first, Milford skips only): S. Taylor, B. Barnikel, C. Guymer, P. Currie 23; R. Thomas 12. L. Guymer, R. Thake, T. Preseton, T. Howells 23; E. Sturley 9. L. Richards, G. Hill, M. Crockford, A. Muskett 21; B. Howells 13. N. Dickinson, R. Holly, P. Hooper, P. Day 19; T. Ellyatt 11.

Tenby 88 (12 pts.) Whitland 71 (2)

Still looking for their first league win, the Coastal Cottages sponsored Tenby team travelled to Whitland on Saturday. On rink one, Lee Richards, Graham Hill, Mike Crockford and Andrew Muskett had a poor finish and eventually lost out 23-26 to the Colin Wynn four. On rink two, Luke Guymer, Reg Thake, Terry Preston and Terry Howells were always in control, winning the rink 21-13 against the Steven Reese quartet. On rink three, Steve Taylor, Bert Barnikel, Craig Guymer and Pat Currie produced another superb performance to win 23-15 against the strong Chris Court rink. Despite all the noise from the opposition, Pat always was in control with some superb bowling. On rink four, Neil Dickinson, Ray Holly (in as a late replacement - thanks Ray), Peter Hooper and Peter Day had another good win, 21-17, against the Glyndwr Thomas rink. So it was an excellent 12-2 victory against an emerging Whitland side and the first league victory of the season. Unfortunately, 'star lead' Gerald Hewitt had to withdraw from this match due to a back injury sustained in work - hope you get better soon 'Hoobeee'. It was certainly quieter on Saturday, which is definitely not a good thing! All the boys hope you make a speedy recovery.
