Yorkshire Cup 2004
The busy month of bowling at Tenby Bowling Club as usual ended with the popular Yorkshire Cup on Bank Holiday Monday. Generously sponsored by the Yorkshire Building Society since its inception in 1982, and as club president Ben Owens underlined at the trophy presentation, they are the longest continuous sponsor of our little club, for which we are grateful. Blessed with another fine day, 20 players beavered away in the round-robin format to produce four section winners. Section A: The winner was in doubt until the last game, when Helen Baggott pipped Bill Bailey by decimal points to win. Section B: Terry Preston coasted through with maximum points, leaving Gerald Hewitt rueing an injudicious firing shot which went severely wrong, denying his chance of progressing. Section C: This proved to be another close affair, with Gerry Brutnell winning on shot difference over Marlene Burn. Gerry showed touches of brilliance en route to the semi-final. Section D: Terry Howells, our gentleman bowler, did well to win this last section, just crossing the line ahead of in-form Gwyn Beynon and unseating last year's winner of the Yorkshire Cup, Alison Redman, in the process. Results in the closing rounds were as follows: Semi-finals: H. Baggott 7 G. Brutnell 1; T. Howells 7 T. Preston 3. Final: Helen Baggott 11 Terry Howells 4. Helen Baggott, the winner, gave a fine display of touch bowling, which Terry Howells, the runner-up, failed to match in an exciting game. Consolation final for third and fourth places: Terry Preston 7 Gerry Brutnell 4. Gerry, who had a very satisfying tournament, kept Terry Preston on his toes over the eight ends final, to the cheers of the knowledgeable spectators. Club Finals
The club's trophy hunters gather en-mass this weekend to clinch their quest for the various cups and shields up for grabs. The most unusual is the 'Last Gasp Trophy' for the over 70s. It is fittingly a substantial 'Seat Stick', generously presented to the club by John Evans, one time of Castle Hill, now residing in Saltash, Cornwall. The 'timetable' has been posted on the club noticeboard by hon. secretary, David Spencer. Trophies will be presented late Sunday afternoon to all winners. There is also a buffet for all members as part of the celebrations.
Last chance
All members who have dropped out of the singles tournaments this season can enter the end of term Castle Hill Cup, also presented much earlier by John Evans and is played through the month of September. This best of three sets trophy is a very testing format, much enjoyed by all.
Ladies Fun Day
With the end of term just around the corner, the ladies section are having a Fun Day on Monday. Rumours are rife as to the 'dress' on this special occasion. All will be revealed!
The Texaco Trophy
Next weekend sees one of the most popular open tournaments in the Welsh bowling calendar, Tenby's 12th Texaco Trophy, sponsored by Texaco Ltd. (Pembroke). Forty pairs of talented bowlers descend on the Tenby club for two days of high-class bowling to win the coveted Texaco Trophy and substantial prize monies. Literally, a feast of bowling thoroughly enjoyed by all. Whitland 93 (10 pts.) Tenby 82 (4)
The Coastal Cottages sponsored Tenby team travelled to Whitland on Saturday for their last away trip of the league season. With both sides on more or less the same number of points, this obviously would be a very close game. Rink one skipped by Simon Evans were always in the ascendancy and ran out comfortable six-shot winners. Simon always keeps a tightly run rink and with solid performances from Gerald Hewitt, Bill Bailey and Terry Preston, the outcome was never in doubt. On the next rink, captain Pat Currie got off to a poor start - at one time he was a massive 16-1 down. But Pat managed to rally his troops of Sam McNeilly, Ted Brutnell and Dai Spencer, who all put in better second half performances. The final result was a defeat of eight shots, which could have been at one stage much worse. Andrew Muskett and his rink of Steve Taylor, Reg Thake and Peter Day were a little slow to start, but soon got control in their match. Taking two counts of four near the end secured a close two-shot victory. Luke Guymer, Rob Wilkins, Jon Webb and skip Terry Howells never really got into their contest and eventually lost out by a disappointing 11 shots. An overall defeat by nine shots was the match result, which now means that Tenby would have to accrue seven points from their final game the following day to finish above Whitland. Rink scores (Tenby first, Whitland skips only): Gerald Hewitt, Bill Bailey, Terry Preston, Simon Evans 25; G. Thomas 19. Steve Taylor, Reg Thake, Peter Day, Andrew Muskett 23; C. Court 21. Luke Guymer, Rob Wilkins, Jon Webb, Terry Howells 17; C. Wynn 28. Sam McNeilly, Ted Brutnell, Dai Spencer, Pat Currie 17; S. Reese 25.
Tenby 84 (10 pts.) Milford Haven 76 (4)
The Coastal Cottages sponsored Tenby entertained Milford Haven for their final match of this season's league campaign. With four key players out on County Under 35 duty and one or two regulars absent, Tenby had to rely on seven Goscar players to fulfil the fixture, which was greatly appreciated. In fact, in the changing rooms before the match, a few players thought they had turned up at the wrong venue. First up were Andrew Muskett and his rink of Steve Taylor, Harry Meads and Bill Bailey. Eighteen-14 down with three ends to go, Andrew and his men turned on the after-burners to accelerate to a three-shot victory. Bill Bailey, a powerhouse at third, always made sure Andrew knew what shot to play! Captain Pat Currie was on fire early in his match, racing into a 22-4 lead. With impressive performances from Jonathan Hubbard, Ted Brutnell and Dai Spencer, the rink managed an easy 14-shot victory. Gerald Hewitt, Reg Thake, Sam McNeilly and skip Terry Howells were in a very close battle in their encounter. Terry and his men took an early lead, but were soon pegged back. They went into the last end all square, but unfortunately it was not to be as the Milford rink picked up a two to ensure victory. Last up was Simon Evans and his rink of Ray Hine, Rob Wilkins and Terry Preston. Simon and his men were always in touch, but the spark was just not there, and they were finally defeated by a disappointing seven shots. So a victory for Tenby in their final game of the season which sees them finish with a top four place. Captain Pat thanked the team for their support through the year and special thanks to the Goscar men who were always willing to play when asked. Today (Friday), Tenby have a semi-final against Pembroke Dock in the R. F. Diment Cup, so there might still be a chance of silverware this season. Rink scores (Tenby first, Milford Haven skips only) were: Gerald Hewitt, Reg Thake, Sam McNeilly, Terry Howells 18; E. Sturley 20. Steve Taylor, Harry Meads, Bill Bailey, Andrew Muskett 21; B. Howells 18. Ray Hine, Rob Wilkins, Terry Preston, Simon Evans 17; D. Buchanan 24. Jonathan Hubbard, Ted Brutnell, Dai Spencer, Pat Currie 28; B. Davies 14.
GOSCAR 65 (2 pts.) PEMBROKE DOCK B 84 (12)
With two games being cancelled in the last week due to bad weather, the boys played their first game for three weeks against the 'B' side of Pembroke Dock on a bright afternoon in Tenby. The match was very close at tea, with only a few shots in it on all rinks. The Goscar team seemed to drop their concentration after that and the Dock took full advantage as they went on to win on three of the four rinks and by a margin of 19 shots. Jonathan Hubbard skipped his men on rink two. Ashley Hoopper stepped in at second and had a steady game. Overall, the Dock always had the slight edge in a very close match, but some very telling bowls when needed by Carl Hughes at skip turned out to be the difference. Still, Jonathan and his crew fought hard and only lost by four shots at the end. Another close encounter was on rink three where skip Rob Wilkins led his quartet superbly. From being 15-11 down after 13 ends, they rallied to lead 19-17 with just two ends left, but unfortunately they couldn't quite hold on as they dropped four shots in the last two ends to lose out by two. Rink five saw Harry Meads really struggle as skip against the experienced Steve James. They never really had anything to build on as his rink only scored on six of the 21 ends, with seven-all being the closest they got to their opposition. They were totally outplayed throughout the game and were beaten by a 14-shot deficit. Performance of the day was that by skip Graham Hill. Graham and his rink of Gerald Hewitt, Alec Vincent and Ray Hine produced some great bowling from start to finish. They raced to a seven-shot lead after 17 ends. The Dock fought hard to try and reduce the gap in the closing stages, but the home side were just too far ahead and secured the win by just one shot. Rink scores (Goscar first, Pembroke Dock B skips only) were: T. Brutnell, A. Hooper, D. Watkins, J Hubbard 15; C. Hughes 19. S. Askew, C. Roberts, S. Taylor, R. Wilkins 19; B. Rixon 21. J. Lester, A. Rootes, A. Grimbaldeston, H. Meads 9; S. James 23. G. Hewitt, A. Vincent, R. Hine, G. Hill 22; S. Davies 21.
FIVE ARCHES 86 (12 pts) ST. ISSELL'S 69 (2)
Two wins on the trot! When relegation from the first division seemed a real possibility, the spirit of the Arches team returned to gain consecutive wins against Neyland last week and now St. Issell's. Pity we did not continue as we started the season when the Arches won three of their first five games. On rink one, Ray Holly scored a count of seven on the seventh end to go into the lead for the first time. Steady bowling throughout the game saw Ray finish six shots to the good. Alongside, Roy Powling's rink had a hard long fight, with fortunes fluctuating immensely. Eight shots down after six ends, they fought back to level the score on the 13th and went into the final end two shots in front. After holding the shot twice, they unluckily lost the end by three shots and the game by a single shot. Mike Crockford's crew, with Peter Hooper having a fine game, were always in the lead and in control against the St. Issell's captain, John Dugmore. Scoring on the last five ends to extend his lead with a fine finish, Mike ran out 10-shot winners. Dave King-Thomas's quartet struggled for most of the game and were eight shots down with five ends to go. Consecutive scores of a five and a four put them into the lead and an eventual win by two shots. Rink scores (Five Arches first, St. Issell's skips only): J. Taylor, J. Best, B. Barnikel, R. Holly 19; D. Newton 13. R. Hurlow, T. Powling, G. Beynon, R. Powling 21; D. Robb 22. B. Russell, M. Donoghue, P. Hooper, M. Crockford 25; J. Dugmore 15. N. Dickinson, B. Diment, D. Silcox, D. King-Thomas 21; J. Moffat 19. The match was sponsored by Coastal and Island Cruises, while the Arches' main sponsors are Stena Line. TENBY 104 EASTLEIGH 87
These tourists from Hampshire were certainly keen, wanting to play only an hour after stepping off their coach. With a sprinkling of Hampshire county stickers on some of the woods, the home side knew they were in for a game. The all-ladies triples combination, skipped by Mair Marquiss, were nip and tuck all the was through game, with the visitors finally squeezing home by three shots. After eight ends, Bert Barnikel and his rink were nine shots down, but they rallied to finally go under by five. Stepping in at the last moment Ted Brutnell with Denis and Mary, fought a great draw, scoring five shots over the last two ends. With Dai King Thomas and Val James combining well and ladies captain Peggy Best at lead, they stormed away for a t13-shot win. With Chris Morgan as usual playing well, Eric and Gwyn consolidated the work done by her to win by three shots. Vera Williams had a great all-round game and with Marlene playing better as the game progressed, Mike's crew came home by nine shots. A great win over a very good all-round side. Rink scores (Tenby first, Eastleigh skips only): P. Best, V. James, D. King Thomas 20; S. Martin 7. C. Morgan, E. Dorling, G. Beynon 18; C. Oxford 15. M. Draper, D. Watkins, T. Brutnell 16; M. Barrett 16. J. Taylor, A. Owens, B. Barnikel 12; E. Kendon 17. M. Skyrme, L. Evans, M. Marquiss 17; J. Barrett 20. M. Burn, V. Williams, M. Crockford 21; C. Larnson 12.
